"The Big Island" of Hawaii Kayaking Tours

The calm waters, abundant sea life, great snorkeling, picturesque sea caves and beautiful weather surrounding the Big Island of Hawaii make it an ideal location for Big Island kayak companies to operate a variety of Hawaii kayak tours.

The most exciting locations for kayaking on the Big Island are to be found off the Kona coast of the Big Island.

Here kayaking in the lee of the giant volcanoes of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea you'll find the tranquil waters to be crystal clear and teeming with sea life.

Don't be surprised to see Dolphins, turtles, perhaps a manta ray or even enjoy Whale Watching (yes, from a kayak) in season.

Snorkeling is particularly great as well and can be done right from your kayak.

One of the great kayaking and Snorkeling spots off the Kona coast is the famous Kealakekua/Keauhou coastline.

A number of kayak and eco-tour companies paddle their way along this historic (Captain Cook was killed here) and beautiful coastline complete with rugged sea cliffs and spectacular sea caves.

Some companies even allow a supervised version of cliff diving when the conditions are considered safe enough on your kayak tour.

Kayak tours are among the most marine intensive of all the ocean activities available to you on the Big Island.

You generally can choose a single or a double kayak and your Snorkeling adventures off the kayaks will be some of the most rewarding to be found on any of the islands.

Some companies also offer various hiking tours in conjunction with your kayaking adventure.

Well, as you may know, the Big Island of Hawaii is a fantastic place to do anything that deals with marine life. Snorkeling, reefs, lots of tropical fish, and also kayaking is a big part of what is really spectacular on the Big Island.

We often say that the kayaking is some of the most marine-intensive of all the marine activities that you can do simply because you're just right on the surface of the ocean. You're right next to everything. You're gliding over coral heads, and close to dolphins of they come by, and turtles. You're just another moving part of the ocean at that point and you just feel so connected to it. So it's one of my favorite ways to get out on the water.

Kayaking on the Big Island is really a lot of fun. Let me show you on the map here. That's the wrong map. This is the Big Island here. So the Big Island of course, as all the islands do, has its dry side and its wet side. The dry side would be this Kona area. This. It would be the area that is less windy and calmer and makes a much more suitable ocean adventure particularly on a kayak.

The kayak tours that we have that go along this coastline, there's a couple of them, but they're very very different than kayak trips that we find on many of the other islands. First of all, because of the extensive amount of seas life that we have there, which isn't found quite as much or at the frequency as we have on other islands. Found much moreso here is what I should say.

Lots of reef. A large expanse of reef that happens in here. Also we have a place called Kealakekua Bay which is an underwater marine reserve, and some of our trips will go there as well. So you get a lot of snorkeling time on these kayak trips to really get out and see some of the marine life. The other thing that happens along that coastline is the caves that we have there.

We have caves on Kauai, but they're only really available during the summertime. These caves are there year-round and really make for some nice exploring with kayaks. I should say that you need to understand that these are only available weather permitting, but most of the time they are. There's dry caves in some cases above the caves that you can kayak in. You can get out and walk into those and kind of hike through them. You're advised to bring a little flashlight if you want to do that.

There's also places that I've known that people have done some little diving off of the cliffs that are there all along that coastline on their kayak trips. So it's a very adventurous exciting kind of a fun way to spend a day. So the Big Island should really fit into your plan for kayaking if that is an activity that you decided you had in mind.

So if you have any questions about tours or activities in Hawaii, just give us a call or check out Tom Barefoot.com. We're here to help.
