Cruise Ship Compatible Activities

(If You're Coming To Hawaii on A Cruise Ship This Page Will Save You Time & Money.)

Although there are a number of cruise ships that visit the Big Island we have focused primarily here on the Pride of America cruise ship from Norwegian Cruise Lines because they are the ones that arrive most frequently on the island and on a yearly basis carry the most people.

All the tours we have listed below in our Cruise Ship Activity Finder are specific to the Pride of America Cruise.

Many of these same tours may be applicable as shore excursions for other cruise line companies but you will need to call us for exact details as the various boats offer completely different schedules and are not always in exact alignment with shore excursion timing.

Shore Excursions for the Pride of America on the Big Island.

The Big Island of Hawaii is the only island that has two landing ports on the cruise schedule for the Pride of America Cruise Ship.

They arrive at both Hilo on the eastern side of the Big Island and later at Kailua-Kona on the western shore.

The arrival at Hilo is 8:00am on Tuesday of the cruise schedule and they depart that day at 6:00pm.

The following day, Wednesday, they arrive at Kailua-Kona at 7:00am and depart that evening at 5:30pm.

Because of the fairly short window of time to participate in shore excursions from each port we have narrowed down the tour possibilities that will either pick you up at the boat or within a very short walk from the pier, or those that will generally allow you to Rent A Car, drive to the activity and then return the car within plenty of time to catch the ship's departure.

  • Many tours will provide you with pick-up directly at the boat dock. View all shore excursions on the Big Island that will pick you up right at the dock.

  • An additional number of tours and activities are available to you while you are docked in either Hilo or Kailua-Kona but will require a Rent A Car to drive to the event. Following is a list of tours that fall into this category. You can book these tours online or over the phone but a Rent A Car must be booked at the same time so you will be able to drive to the departure point of the activity. Please indicate when you make a tour booking that you would like us to arrange for a car. We often have a choice of Rent A Car models to choose from but we will always choose the one for you that is the least expensive price based upon the number of passengers unless you explain to us that you would prefer a price upgrade. View all Big Island shore excursions you can drive to if you arrange for us to provide you with a rent-a-car.

Disclaimer: Tom Barefoot's Tours will not be responsible for cancellation charges imposed by tours that were booked but not attended because of problems regarding Rent A Car, taxis, shuttle services or any other form of transportation. Charges for missed tours within 24 hours of the departure time of the tour are always the total cost of the ticket. Any complications arising by missing the departures of Pride of America from any port due to transportation issues or any other reason are fully the responsibility of the cruise passengers.

Look for this symbol in the tour descriptions below to indicate if it is Pride of America compatible.

If you're on a cruise ship and you're coming to visit the Big Island, you might want to take advantage of some of our shore excursions that are available to you. Many ships throughout the course of the year will come, and land in Hilo, or they'll come into Kailua Kona on that side. Then you'll have an opportunity to get out and see some of the things that are available to you in terms of activities in that portion of the island. The way it normally works if you're on a cruise ship is that the cruise ship can actually arrange some of these activities for you. They'll have certain things that they'll have put together. You can choose to do those, and that's fine.

The one advantage that you might have with operating Tom Barefoot's Tours is that we are going to have a much larger variety of options for you, and also, most likely a better pricing, a better price point. What we've done is we have a look at all the tours and see how they can relate with regard to the cruise ships. So there are certain tours that will come, and pick you up at the cruise ships. So that's one possibility that can happen. What really gives us the expanse of options for you is we've actually figured out which tours there are, of which there are many, many. That if you had a rental car, you could just drive to that activity. You could participate in that, enjoy it, and then you can drive that car back, and catch the ship.

We figured out which ones have enough time so that you could arrange for the rental car, and then get to the activity, enjoy the activity, and then get back, return the rental car before the ship sails. We handle the rental car for you. We can organize that as well as the tours. You will find when you look through the options that you've got, that there are just literally dozens, and dozens, and dozens of different options that are available to you on either side of the island. So please take a look. We're more than glad to work with you, and set up whatever you want. It may broaden your horizons, and allow you to see a little bit more of the Big Island then you would normally be able to see without using us, and just coming in, and landing at the port with one of the big ships.

So if you have any questions about tours or activities in Hawaii, just give us a call, or check out TomBarefoot.com. We're here to help.
