Oahu Fishing Charters

Oahu Sport Fishing Charters are a good choice if your are looking for big game fishing in Hawaii.  Located close to your Waikiki hotels these tours can be arranged for 4 hour, 6 hour or 8 hour fishing trips (half, three-quarter or full-day trips).  You can also choose to take them out on a private basis in which the entire boat is exclusive to your party, or you can choose to go on a per person basis in which you sign up with other fisherman on the same boat.  Most of these Oahu fishing boats have a capacity for 6 fishermen. Tom Barefoot's Tours offers discounts on many of the Oahu Sportfishing Charters.

Here are some common strategies implemented by experienced Oahu Sport Fishing Captains:

  • The fisherman here know these waters well and often will take advantage of the sharp drop-off not far off the coast of Waikiki and head north toward the north-west corner of the island at Kaena Point.
  • Because of the speed of these vessels a tremendous amount of territory can be covered in a single day, often as much as 60 miles.
  • Following this area of great drop-off is a tactic designed to catch the big fish as they swim up from the deep waters of the channel between Kauai and Oahu.
  • Another tact used by experienced fisherman is to reverse course and head to the shallow fishing grounds to the south of Waikiki called Pinnacles and another area called Penguin Banks.

These strategies will be determined based upon the catch of the previous days, reports from other boats and the likelihood of changing ocean conditions that may alter the location of fish.

What are the types of fish commonly caught off the coast of Oahu:

  • Skip Jack and Yellow Fin Tuna
  • Mahimahi
  • Ono (Wahoo)
  • Trevally
  • Shark
  • Pacific Blue Marlin
  • Striped and Short Billed Marlin

Weather conditions as they relate to fishing on Oahu

  • Oahu fishing charters go out all year long
  • Every day can be different in terms of weather so no guarantees there
  • The greatest likelihood for problem weather is going to be in the winter months.  During these months however, the days between any possible storm conditions are among the most beautiful to be experienced during the entire year.
  • It is not always possible to pick the best days for fishing on Oahu during the winter as one day can be very different from the next so just like all forms of fishing itself, you simply pay your money and take your chances because fishing, as you know, has no guarantees.

If you're looking to do some fishing while you're on the island of Oahu, you're in good luck.

We have all types of fishing that happens on the island and we usually do pretty well out there catching fish. Let's pull up a map so you can see what's happening here. Here's Oahu and down here we've got Pearl Harbor, this is Honolulu, Waikiki, so this is kind of the area where you will be staying most likely as a visitor here. The most common type of fishing that we have, the one that most people wanna do is the sport fishing. Now this is the fishing you're going out trolling. You're looking for the big game fish: the marlin, the skipjack, the yellowfin tuna, the mahi-mahi, the ono. These are the fish that we catch on these charters and they are the most exciting. This is where your trolling at speed. You've got lines behind you. The fish go for the lures or sometimes live bait that's on the line and then you hook 'em up and you bring 'em in the boat.

There are a couple locations that are typically gone to, where we do the fishing. Most of the boats are gonna go out of the Honolulu area and one of the more popular places to go sport fishing is heading out this way and on up to Kaena Point. It's quite a distance, but these boats are very fast and capable and if you're doing the full days and so on, they can log 60 miles. This is an excellent choice of a place, of a way to go. The water gets fairly deep as you're moving between here, into the channel. Next island over this direction is Kauai. Water gets really deep down there. The fish end up coming up along Oahu's shores and so it's a fairly decent place for fishing. That's one area. Another area, this place is more to the south that they can go, area called Pinnacles. Then there's more in the direction toward Molokai, there's penguin banks.

Depending upon what's happening, in terms of fishing, where fish have been caught, what the captain's have heard from other boats, there's gonna be some decisions made as to which direction they'll go. That's on a daily basis, those decisions will be rendered. The choices in terms of types of days, are basically half day, three quarter, and full day. And that means a half day is four hours, three quarters is six and a full day is eight. Obviously your best chances of catching fish are going to be on the full day or the six hour, as opposed to the four because you're out there longer, but that's up to you. You make the choice of what kind of, what size day, what length of day you want it to be.

The other decision that needs to be decided is do you want to go out on a private basis or a share basis. Now most of the boats that we have going out of Oahu are gonna be six passenger boats. On a private, now that's probably the best way to go. It's also the most expensive way to go of the two choices. But in this way, you've got six seats that are yours. Now it just may be you or you and a friend that's going out or you could bring six of your friends, well, six people total. The entire boat is yours for a particular price.

You can have an eight hour private and the boat's yours for eight hours or six hours or four hours, whatever you choose. The one thing that really makes this, I think, a little bit nicer is that, for one, you're only with your own group; you're not dealing with other people. And also you've got this kind of direct relationship with the captain and you guys are making decisions as to where to go, what would best suit your needs, what type of fish you're looking for. There's some decisions that are made there that would likely be more difficult if you got more people involved in making the decisions. You kind of like call the shots, what you wanna do, which really, really makes it nice. That's the private, that can be one person or as many as six, all the same price, k?

Then the second way is a share boat. Share boat you're, you may be a couple and you would sign up with another couple or another four people and go out. Now one of the downsides to this is that generally speaking, these boats are gonna need four passengers, four fishermen, in order to make the boat a go, in order to make it financially solid for the boat. If you call up, or have us call up, and just wanna arrange a share boat and there's nobody on for that period of time, we're not gonna be able to confirm you. We can kinda maybe get you on a day and hope somebody else shows up and then as soon as we get two couples, that's four people, we know it's gonna be a go and it's confirmed. But sometimes it can be dicey waiting for those situations to occur.

You could always, of course, you could be a couple, you could pay for four people, and then you're guaranteed to go out and that'd be kinda like a private. However, since you didn't pay the private price, another couple may come on and so it'd be the two of you with another couple, but you paid for four seats. However you wanna do it. If there's two people that are already scheduled, or plan to be scheduled and you're a party of two, they'll go, "yeah, we can confirm it", and we go from there. Anyway, that's the way that works with regard to the shares and the privates.

One thing I should mention now with regard to the fish that you catch, every boat's a little bit different. Part of the way that they actually make money as a fishing boat because it's pretty hard to do, it's a lot of expenses involved, a lot of gas involved in these, a lot of diesel and so these captains and these fisherman actually do this a lot because they really enjoy it, but part of the way they make money is by selling the fish at the end of the day. That's what's gonna happen with the nice fish that come out, is they're gonna take that fish and they're gonna sell it to a restaurant, you're gonna find it at the restaurant that night and be able to eat it then.

Actually it's a little bit better than that. Usually what will happen is they will ask you how many people you've got back at the hotel, how many in your party, and then they'll cut off enough filets to be able to take you back and you can have a fish fry that night and have lots of stories to tell. Not to mention the fact that it's pretty hard for just a regular person visiting here to be able to have the wherewithal to bring a fish somewhere and sell it, get it there somehow, all that. So that's the way it works with the fish. That being said, every boat's a little bit different in terms of how they do it. You might wanna have that discussion before you actually go out so you know what to expect. A lot of times they will smaller fish tag and release, that sort of thing. But as I say, every boat is different.

That's the sport fishing, the big game fishing, the trolling. The other kind of fishing we have is bottom fishing. On these charters, you're going out and you're looking at, well, you'll stop at some place where fish are believed to be on the bottom. Then you're putting a reel down and you're line goes down maybe 60-200 feet, something like that. You fish off the bottom and you're looking for the trevally or the various snappers that we have, usually. There's a number of different fish that we have. These can be good eating fish, as well, and in all likelihood, you'll be able to take these fish home. That's the way that bottom fishing works. It's not as exciting, perhaps, as kind of sinking into one of the big, big fish that we got as we're trolling, but you're more likely to catch fish, so in that sense it's a little bit more fun too. You never know about the trolling. It's either happening or it's not. Bottom fishing you're almost always catching fish.

But it doesn't end there. There's other types of fishing that we can do on Oahu. We have fishing that can be done from the shoreline, like tackle, even fly fishing, like in Montana, but you're doing it in more still areas off the coast line. We also have spearfishing, so you can learn how to spearfish. The locals here that have been doing this all their lives, really know how to do it well and they make sure that you understand how to do it and the safest ways and how to use the equipment before you get in the water, but anyway, that can be done as well. Fishing is something that you can easily do off Oahu. Give us enough time to be able to make the arrangements. A lot of times it's very difficult for us to get people booked on boats because they're so booked so the longer time lead we have, the more likely we can get what you want. Fishing on Oahu. People don't always realize the fact that Kauai is a great place to go deep sea fishing. The ocean bottom just off its coast is reminiscent of the coastline off Kona on the Big Island in the sense that it drops off dramatically creating a void for the big fish coming in from the oceans depths.

Maui's deep sea fishing charters usually depart from either Lahaina or Maalaea Harbors. These fishing charters come in 4 hour, 6 hour or 8 hour tours and can be either "share boats" where you go out with other anglers or "private charters".
