Zip line courses on Maui
Zip line courses come in all shapes and sizes on Maui. Some courses have lines of only four or five zips and others have as many as eight or so. Some have zip line lengths of as little as and others will extend to about 3500'. All zip lines travel at some distance above the ground but some can be as high as 600' which equates to the height of a sixty story building. Some zip lines are located in beautiful forest areas and some even have zip lines that extend throughout the tree tops of the forest from platform to platform high above the ground. The speeds you attain on the various zip lines can extend from a range of 10 to 60 mph. Many zip lines on Maui have beautiful views of the ocean from their various zips and others careen over huge mountain valleys from ridge to ridge. Some courses include the use of various agility towers that allow the participants to maneuver over great spans in ropes courses high above the ground or allow you to crawl the towers on their rock climbing walls or traverse the various course bridges which swing in mid-air. Maui has become a playground of options with regard to zip line courses and there is certainly one out there, or many, that will provide the perfect challenge for you.
Zip line Speeds on Maui
Zip line speeds vary considerably on the zip line courses in Hawaii. Generally the longer the zip line, the faster you will go, but this is not always the case. Zippers can travel at a great variety of speeds on the various zip line courses ranging from an individual zip speed of 10 mph to some which actually can hit speeds of 60 mph. Another determining factor of zip line speed is amount of descent between the departure landing and the arrival landing zone. Some zip courses can have an elevation disparity of 500 to 600 and these courses are often among the fastest. One other factor that plays with speed on a zip line course is the wind factor. Some courses offer zips between ridges high on the mountain tops or near prevalent and gusty trade winds which can have the effect of either speeding up your ride or slowing it down depending upon the direction of the wind and the direction you are traveling in. Keep in mind that you as a zip line rider can also affect your speed of travel on the course. A maneuver often referred to as the starfish can be used to slow your forward momentum by providing more body surface area to slow you down and the reverse can occur when you streamline your body into a straight line position which will tend to provide less air resistance and speed you up.
Zip line Harnesses
Zip line harness on Maui basically come in two styles: the older style where you grip the carabineer with your steering hand and the newer style that allows you to sit back in somewhat of a lounge sling and simply enjoy the ride. The older style, which is typically found on the original zip line courses in Hawaii, has you sitting in a more upright position. You are strapped in around your waist and thighs and a perpendicular strap which attaches to the zip line wheels trolley comes straight down from the cable above past your sternum to the harness. Your steering hand is used to control a carabineer which allows you to maneuver yourself in either direction, to the right or to the left. The newer models are a bit more high-tech and to some feel a bit more comfortable. Your position zipping down the line is more prone and tending more toward horizontal to the ground below. Steering is not really a major factor in the newer models. Keep in mind that no matter what type of harness you use you will ultimately be delivered to the exact point on the exit ramp whether you have the capability to steer or not. When using the older models however you are always warned not to put your hand anywhere near the cable itself, which is near the carabineer you are asked to hold when steering. This could result in injury.
