Submarine And Glassbottom Boat Tours

Maui Submarine Tours

  • If you're one of the few who have been on a submarine, I'll bet it didn't have windows! Here's your chance to board a $4.5 million submarine, dive to a depth of 150 feet, and cruise around the ocean floor for the better part of an hour and see everything out there from the best vantage point possible. Sound exciting? A Maui submarine tour is!

  • Your Maui submarine tour will include a visit to a specially designed artificial reef based around the scuttling of the once popular tour attraction boat called the Carthaginian which was a replica of an 1800's vintage supply ship. Being badly in need of extensive repairs a decision was made that a better use for the vessel would be to sink in it in the nearby coastal waters and allow fish and coral formations to use it as a home. Today our Maui submarines dive on this artificial ship reef with its intriguing colony of underwater guests.

  • The climate-controlled cabin and giant viewing ports make your submarine tour below the surface both comfortable and interesting. You'll see hundreds and hundreds of fish and coral heads of all sizes and colors. Sometimes you'll see eels, rays and occasionally a shark. As you inch along the sea floor, more and more is revealed, color upon color, shape upon shape. During the winter months whales have swum into view. Each submarine tour is different, but each dive is exciting, informative and educational.

  • During my first Maui submarine tour, I remember thinking how incredible it was to be down that deep for that long. It dawned on me that I was actually spending a small part of my day on the ocean floor. This underwater world was a world which had previously only been available to me via motion pictures or television as even on my former Snorkeling Excursions I had never dived that deep. I remember thinking how wonderful it would be if every child could have this experience. They would be aware for the rest of their lives that there was a marine world below the surface of the water happening in real time every moment of the day just as they're lives were happening. Was I impressed with my first submarine tour? You bet, and I know you will be as well!

Maui Glass Bottom Boats -- Semi-Submersibles

  • The underwater experience of a glass-bottom boat is similar to that on a submarine except you remain on the ocean surface. The cost is less but the visual impact can be impressive as well.

57' Glass-Bottom Boat (Semi-Submersible Submarine)

The Reef Dancer is Maui's glassbottom boat. Although it looks like, and is shaped like a submarine, this vessel actually just sits on the ocean's surface. You will be viewing the underwater sea life through ports which are located on the second level under the main deck. This is a great tour for children in particular as it only a 60 or a 90 minute tour depending upon which option you choose.

So when is the last time that you guys were on a submarine? A real submarine.

A submarine that actually goes down to the ocean floor and stays there for awhile. Not a Disneyland type submarine, but the real deal. Probably not too many hands up out there. This is an opportunity you'll have on the island of Maui.

We've got a submarine that'll take you off the coast. This goes off of Laahana. You will get onto a boat at the harbor and that'll transport you out to where the submarine is, a couple of miles off the coast.

You'll board the submarine, and then you'll go down into the submarine itself. You'll sit on long benches, each one of you will have a window port that you'll be able to look out. They will close the hatch and you will descend approximately 100 feet or so to the bottom of the ocean floor.

The area that they generally go to is a area that there's a shipwreck, the Carthaginian has been down there for a number of years and has a lot of coral formations and a lot of fish that hang around there and makes it really interesting to see.

But, this is one of the most unusual trips that you can do. A lot of people get a little bit uncomfortable about being in one of theaters, being enclosed. Let me just talk about that for a second just so you get the idea.

First of all, there is a complete rush of air that is continuously happening throughout the submarine the entire time that you're down. And it just really helps to be able to breathe fresh air and so on.

The typical submarines that you think about, if you've not been on one. If you have on one it's probably been in your days in the Navy and the submarine didn't have any windows. So these have windows, it's a sight-seeing submarine.

You can look out, that really makes it less claustrophobic. And, a lot of people have a problem with ... well gee, if I go down is there a problem getting back up? Is that going to happen? If you were to completely lose power on this, you would float to the top.

The engines are kind of, are forcing the submarine down and if all the engines were cut, you would ... Just simply the buoyancy of the submarine would bring it back up to the top. So, these are some questions that people continuously have about these.

Most people don't have a problem with it at all. And most people, when they hear these things about it, don't have a problem either because it is really a very, very different experience that you get.

I mean, you're actually down for 40 minutes, 405 minutes something like that. You're down at a depth that is deeper than you probably would be going if you were a diver, and especially for that length of time.

So you're actually really under the water, really seeing what's under the water and understanding life for that moment under the ocean. And that is a real ... I think it's a moment of education.

It gives you a different perspective, not just for a second as you're looking through a Snorkel mask, and looking at the ocean but, or at the fish or a reef. But now you're down under, you can look way up and you can see the surface up there.

And for the fact that you're there for that amount of time, sort of puts you in a place where you just go, this is underwater. This is what being under water is like. This is where the fish life on this planet live, this is their home and I'm getting to visit it.

So it's a very educational experience and especially I think for young kids just to have that experience, just to get that for that short period of time. Anyway, this is something that's very popular on the island. We tours that go about every hour thought the day starting in the morning and into the mid-afternoons.

Weather is usually not a problem, if a wind comes up or something like that, you're under the ocean and the wind is not going to affect you. So, we don't have too many problems with regard to weather and the submarine.

But the submarine, if you have the slightest inclination to do it, I think you will really enjoy taking a tour on a sub. So, in addition to the submarine, we have glass-bottom boats. These are very different, obviously their on top of the water, you're looking down.

It's a little bit more like the level you would be at Snorkeling, and you're staying close to the reef. So, you're kind of moving along seeing the coral, seeing the fish. You can wander back up ... You sort of go down underneath on the boat to see through the glass bottom, but you can wander back up to the surface and have beautiful views of the day top-side.

Which it is beautiful looking at Laahana and you're actually out between the islands of Lanai, and Moloka'i, and Kaho'olawi as well as Laahana. So it's just beautiful out there to begin with. But this once again is a great one for children also, the glass bottom boat.

But it just gets you on the water for a period of time. A little bit shorter, maybe an hour or an hour and a half. So it's a short amount of time. It's obviously less expensive because it's much less high tech than the submarine. Two different kinds of experiences, but very similar.

Submarines, something that is a very cool thing to do on the island of Maui. So if you have any questions about Tours or Activities in Hawaii, just give us a call or check out Tombarefoot.com. We're here to help.

Looking for a submarine in Hawaii? The islands of Oahu, Maui and the Big Island all have Hawaii submarine tours, and with good reason. Hawaii is blessed with an abundance of reef and sea life and seeing it on a submarine is, for most people, the only way they will be able to get deep enough to appreciate this part of Hawaii.
