Kayaking Tours

Tours which kayak Maui will provide you with an authentic ocean experience.  Let us help you find the right kayak Maui tour for you.

Do you want an ‘up close and personal’ ocean encounter on a Maui boat tour.  You can’t beat a trip on a kayak to really take in the ocean environment.  Maui’s coastline provides the ideal location for a kayaking tour. This is particularly true in the early morning when the ocean is smooth as silk.

Many coastline spots are perfect for a Maui kayak experience.

  • One of the most picturesque spots for a kayak tour is off the coast of Makena in South Maui.

  • The underwater marine preserve of Honolua Bay is a fantastic location for a kayak excursion.

  • Another perfect location would be the reefs off Olowalu.

What can you expect on a typical Maui kayak tour experience?

First, you will generally meet your kayak company directly at the location where you will be entering the water.

There will be a familiarity session on the beach next to your kayak where you will be introduced to the features of your specific kayak. You will be given some basic safety instructions and overall precautions which will pertain to all Maui kayak adventures.

You will also receive a lesson on the proper use of your kayak paddle and you will likely be issued a snorkel mask and some snorkel instruction if you wish to do some snorkeling on the trip.

Now comes the real fun!

You will launch yourself out into the ocean through the waves after you understand the instructions you were given.

This can often be the trickiest part of the entire kayak tour as you experiment with your balance and 'sea legs'. Once out beyond the breaking surf you will wait for the others to be launched until your small group is out at sea and then you will begin your paddle in the area that you have signed up for to explore.

 Snorkeling from your Kayak

Your instructor will demonstrate the best ways to disembark and remount from your kayak.  This will come in handy as you may choose to snorkel at some point in the day.

You can enjoy the experience in a double kayak with someone in your party or a new found friend.  You can usually have your own kayak in most cases as well if you prefer.

A relaxing paddle, at a relaxed pace

These tours are not meant to be a race and the pace is usually quite casual and gives you plenty of time to take-in the sights of both the sea beneath you and the spectacular coastlines you will be passing by.

Your kayak guide or guides will usually be on a separate kayak and will be continuously monitoring the entire group.

You will often stop for a mid-ocean lunch or snack.  Soon you will be headed back to your departure point.  Then, one by one, you will be guided back in through the surf to the comfort of the beach.

See whales, dolphins and other sea life from a kayak.

During the winter months it is not unusual to see whales from your kayak and on these occasions you would likely pay double to re-do the event again.

There is nothing quite like being on the ocean in a silent gliding kayak. Seeing one of these magnificent whales from sea level on your kayak will be a thrill that will stay with you always. From your kayak you can also see dolphins.  These events will 'make' your entire vacation.

Customer Favorite Tours Based on Reviews

Kayaking tours on Maui. Good choice. This is one of the most fun, certainly one of the most marine intensive of the water activities that we can provide for you, on the island of Maui.

You're not on the big boat. You're not even on a zodiac, you are right smack on the water. Gliding along, in many cases, almost effortlessly. And no motors, to scare anything away.

You're as close to marine life as could possibly be. If you're over giant coral heads, well there they are, just right down below you. You got a chance to see it. The fish, you can see them swimming by. You're close to a dolphin. Dolphins can come right up to you. One of the real thrills we have, in a winter time, is to see whales. You're generally not incredibly close to the Whales, but you can see them out there, and just that is a thrill, to see something from a short, to see whales from a short distance while you are on the surface of the ocean in the kayak.

These are great, great trips. We have many companies that go out, and will take you out on a quite a number of different tours. There are kind of smaller groups of people. Generally maybe a maximum of about eight kayaks. Often quite less. You've got a couple of guides that'll go out with you as a general rule. And you can be ether singly in a kayak, or you can be double, like these people are here. That's the most popular way. Also, if you don't like to paddle much, you can have your friend do all the paddling for you, I guess.

But really there's not too much in a way of exertion, certainly there is you're moving along, and so on. But the distances that we go along here, on the majority of these kayak tours are not substantial. Two or three miles. There are some exceptions to that. But generally these are kind of moderate paced, maybe a couple of hours, maybe three hours in total. You're stopping, you're doing Snorkeling, you may have a little refreshments, or some kind of lunch, or snacks any way out there, for a mid ocean stop. So they're kind of casual. I'm kind of in love with these, they're just, it's just fun to be out on the water. To be that close to the water, and everything that's in it. And to have control of your own little vessel, and cruise along. It's great.

So, the way these usually work, is that many people have never been in a kayak, and they're not familiar with how they operate. So, you'll ether meet at the spot that you're gonna be kayaking from. That's usually what happens, every once in awhile we'll have you meet at a certain location and you're driven to the place where you'll actually kayak. But while you're still on the beach, there's gonna be some general discussion of how to kayak, how to best use the paddles, safety information, and everybody is gonna get pretty clued in, and it's fairly simple to learn.

Then you're gonna be getting into the water, depending upon where you're going out, you may end up going through small Surf Break. That's usually the big event of the day, is getting out through the break, it's usually not very difficult at all. But they explain the technique that you use to do that. Also, if at some point you jump of to do some Snorkeling, or for some reason fall of, or something, how to get back on the easiest way. All those things are just kind of explained to you.

Then you're taken out through the surf usually one by one. And you've got your instructor with you, or near you. And when everybody is assembled outside of the Surf Break, or whatever it is, you maybe going out through a channel, and there's not much surf going on, depending on where you are. Then they'll begin the little cruise to wherever the destination is going to be. Then as I say, maybe two hours, maybe three hours. Three hours is pretty much a general rule. Maybe three to four, little bit more toward the three side. And then come back in.

So, it's a nice morning, or an afternoon. However, I will say that the mornings are generally the best time. We've got the winds that will come up generally often, quite often, in the afternoons. Makes it more difficult to paddle. So, you're usually in glassy conditions in the morning, so that's the best time to do these.

Let me show you, see if I can get a map up here. So this is a map of Maui, and the places that you can kind of go from, or the places to actually see. There's a few, and of course they're all along the coastline of Maui. We have Makena, which is one of the best places. Lots of a coral formations, and fish for snorkeling, very beautiful view of the coastline. But also, we get the turtles here. So, that happens quite frequently, you'll be paddling next to, and then Snorkeling with turtles. And then also this coastline is quite well known for dolphins. Dolphins can happen here more often than in other areas, although they are known to happen everywhere. So, this coastline right here, especially as it gets close to Makena on this side.

On the west side a number of locations. A Thousand Peaks is kind of in this area. And that's a location that we go from. A little bit to the north, not as far as Lahaina, we have Olowalu, these are wonderful places for kayaking. And then, depending on the time of year, usually in the summer time we've got Honolua Bay underwater marine reserve up our north, which is excellent for the kayaking. And then Kaupo and above, we have some trips that go up there.

So, there's a number of trips that are located on Maui. And if we're speaking about Maui County, we can also include Molokai. And there're some wonderful paddles that happen over here, along the south coastline. These are usually a little bit longer. They can be five miles, they can be as much as eight and half miles. And there's a lot to see in the water, over on Molokai. That maybe something that you'd want to arrange by, I mean, if you're staying on Molokai, that can happen easily enough. But if you need to get there, you'll probably be wanting to take the ferry from Lahaina over to Kaunakakai, hook up with the kayak excursion, and then take the ferry back to Maui. So that turns it in a little bit more of a day, but you get to see Molokai.

So, those are the primary things to know, I think, about kayaking on Maui. One of the really fun things to do. You can take children, usually they're gonna be 12 and under. Some of the companies little bit less. But it's a great event to go out with the child and with you in the kayak. It's just a good experience, good family experience for sure. Kayaking on Maui.

Just one correction on the kayak video, that was just recorded. The last thing I said was something about children being 12 and under. In reality what I meant to say was that, a child can go as young as, usually, five or six. And a child is considered between five and twelve years old. So yeah, we can bring children, and we can go as low as five on many of these, although they do vary depending on a specific service.
