Kayaking on Maui is a great way to view Maui's ocean environment.

Maui's coastline is ideal for a kayaking tour, particularly in the early morning when the ocean is smooth as silk.

Many coastline spots are perfect for a Maui kayak experience!

  • The underwater marine preserve of Honolua Bay is fantastic for a Maui kayaking tour.
  • Maui kayak tours have always been popular along the coastline of Olowalu.
  • Picturesque kayaking spots such as off the coast of Makena are favorites.
  • Many locations along the Kihei coast are excellent for Maui kayaking.

What does a normal Maui kayak tour look like?
There are obviously many different Maui kayak companies, each having a number of different tours all varying in length and locations, but there are certain aspects of the kayak tours that are pretty much similar in all of them. First, you will generally meet your kayak company directly at the location where you will be entering the water. There are some variations however where you will meet at a shop and then be transported to the departure location. There will be a familiarity session on the beach next to your kayak where you will be introduced to the features of your specific kayak and given some basic safety instructions and overall precautions which will pertain to all Maui kayak adventures. You will be given a lesson on the proper use of your kayak paddle and you will likely be issued a snorkel mask and some snorkel instruction if you plan to do some snorkeling on the trip.
Once you understand the instructions that were given you will probably be launched one at a time out into the ocean through the surf. This can often be the trickiest part of the entire kayak tour and special attention is placed upon this maneuver by your guide. Once out beyond the breaking surf you will wait for the others to be launched until the entire group is out at sea and then you will begin your paddle in the area that you have signed up for to explore. Most Maui kayak adventures will include snorkeling at some portion of the day and your instructor will demonstrate the best ways to disembark from your kayak and to re-mount. In most cases you will be assigned a double kayak and will be enjoying the experience with one of your party or a new found friend on the tour. If you want, in most cases, you will be allowed to have your own kayak if you prefer. These tours are not meant to be a race and the pace is usually quite casual and gives you plenty of time to take-in the sights of both the sea beneath you and the spectacular coastlines you will be passing by.
Your kayak guide or guides will usually be on a separate kayak and will be continuously monitoring the entire group. It is important that you pay attention to the whereabouts of the guide as he may alter the course of the tour based upon sea conditions or wind at any time for safety reasons. Quite often a stop will be made for a mid-ocean lunch or snacks and within a reasonable amount of time you will be headed back to the departure point and then one by one, be guided back in through the surf to the comfort of the beach.

Maui Kayaks and whales, dolphins and other forms of sea life...
During the winter months it is not unusual to see whales from your kayak and on these occasions you would likely pay double to re-do the event again. There is nothing quite like being on the ocean in a silent gliding kayak and seeing one of these magnificent whales from sea level. The same could be said about the pods of dolphins that often skirt through a Maui kayak excursion and it is not unusual for these playful ocean jesters to come very close and check you out just for the fun of it. Snorkeling off the side of your kayak will bring you into contact with a whole other world of undersea adventure and these Maui kayak tours are often the most marine intensive experiences of all the different types of excursions offered on the island.
