Horseback Riding Tours

Horseback rides on Maui can be found on the thousands of acres of ranch land that exist on the island.

Maui horseback riding stables and working ranches are located from Kapalua in West Maui to Makena in South Maui and from Waihee Valley in Central Maui to Hana.

All horseback riding companies will want to know your level of experience so you can be matched up with a horse that will be appropriate.

If you're a beginner, don't worry, we've seen your kind before.

If you're a veteran equestrian we have rides that are a bit more challenging.

Maui horseback rides will take you:

  • Horseback riding through a tropical rain forest.

  • Onto the ranch lands high above the central valley, with views galore.

  • Horseback riding through Eucalyptus forests and meadowlands.

  • From the beach at Makena up the slopes toward Ulupalakua.

Some considerations for your Maui horseback adventure:

  • Maui Horseback riding tours all have restrictions about children but the ages allowed will vary from usually a minimum of age 6 to age 12 and under certain circumstances younger ones can even ride. Let us know if you have little guys wanting to ride horseback; we'll try to accommodate them.

  • Horseback rides range from a couple of hours to all day. Let us know how much time you'd like to spend on this activity and we'll help you plan accordingly.

Norwegian Cruise Lines -Pride of America Cruise Ship: Maui Horseback Riding Tours will not pick up directly at the cruise boat pier but these horseback rides can be reached via a Rent-A-Car that can be arranged through Tom Barefoot's Tours and you can be picked up by the Rent-A-Car shuttles right at the cruise ship dock. The specifics for each of the tours listed below can be found in the 'restrictions' paragraph when you click on the tour. Dependent upon the individual horseback tour these are generally available on the Sunday or Monday of your Maui cruise itinerary.

Look for this symbol in the tour descriptions below to indicate if it is Pride of America compatible.

Video Transcript

This video segment is going to be about Horseback Riding on the island of Maui.

Horseback riding is very popular. Not just here, throughout the entire state. All the islands have Horseback Riding that they offer, maybe a little bit more popular to some degree in Maui.

I think we've got about eight stable that is all around the island, all the different terrain that are available to you. we've got them up on the West Side, Kapalua, Lahaina, we've got Kahakuloa area and above Wailuku up on those spots, Piiholo is up in Olinda, which is above Makawao up in the forest region about 3000-foot elevation. Also up country in the Kula area has beautiful views. We've got Horseback Riding down on the coast in Makana, then a little bit further down in Kanaio, kind of sweeping towards the capitol area. We have trips that go to the coast from the road up above. You're going down maybe 1500 feet or so, in elevation down to the ocean.

We have a lot of different tours that are available to you, a lot of different times. Many of them are just two hours in duration. Others are four hours or even six hours. We have them in the morning, we even have them in the afternoon, and we have them at sunset time which of course is very beautiful. We have some that will include lunches and others are just out for the ride.

There is just a tremendous amount that you can do with regard to the Horseback Riding. As far as ages, a lot of people want to bring children. We actually have some ranches that would take youngsters as low as 4 and 5 years old, most are over that. There are some restrictions regarding weight, usually when you get into the above 250lbs, getting you to be a little bit too much job for the horse. Each separate Ranch has its own level that it will take in terms of how much weight.

Aside from the pure joy of riding horses and seeing sceneries. We also have riding schools, where they teach you how to ride. We've got some horsemanship courses which are kind of geared toward children but don't necessarily have to be just for children. These are really nice in the sense that they really teach you a lot. Just about horsemanship in general and building confidence with horses, learning about them, about their anatomy, learning how to saddle a horse, how to bridle a horse, about all the different gates that a horse has.

These are really a little bit more in depth in comprehension of what can be taught with regard to horseback riding and horses. We've got so many opportunities, there are so much different things regarding horseback riding and it's a good thing because we've got a lot of people that want to go out and do these horseback rides.

Just let us know what you're interested in and we'll be more than glad to help you with organising any of these trips throughout the island of Maui.
