Kauai Surfing Lessons

Learning to surf in the warm waters of Kauai is ideal.

Surfing was a sport of the ancient Hawaiians and due in large part to the popularity of surf lessons on Kauai offered by a variety of Kauai surf schools it even more popular on Kauai today.

Kauai's abundant coastline offers big waves for surfing veterans and Kauai surfing spots suitable for beginners It is believed that the sport of surfing has been around for thousands of years as practiced by the Western Polynesians.

Perhaps the ancient fisherman of those times used the waves to carry them back to shore with their catch.

At some point however the art of surfing for the pure pleasure of it came about and the golden heyday of surfing was practiced on these very shores of Kauai in the years following the 4th century AD which was believed to be the timing of the first islanders to arrive from Polynesia.

From that point forward surfing became a highly specialized Hawaiian sport and indeed the best surf breaks on Kauai were reserved for the "Alii" class and Kauai surfing became the "sport of kings".

Today Kauai surfers can be found riding various surf breaks with various degrees of difficulty throughout Kauai.

  • Some of Kauai's surf breaks can be enormous as the winter swells break on the northern sides of the island.

  • There are also waves that are consistently suitable to learn to surf and the many Kauai surfing schools offer surfing lessons to the uninitiated.

Many Hawaii surfing schools will boast that anyone can be riding the surf in just one lesson and that indeed, was the case when my son Jake tried surfing the first time.

This, however, was not my experience on my first surfing adventure.

I had a great time, but I was still "wave surfing illiterate" after my first attempts.

Just recently on a visit to Kauai however, I gave surfing another try and indeed I was able to stand up three or four times during my two-hour surf lesson.

Kauai has many surfing schools and there is one that will suit your experience-level just perfectly.

Some of Kauai's surf instructors have been on the professional surfing tour circuit and are great surf instructors providing surfing lessons on Kauai for both beginners and advanced surfers.

Kauai Stand-up paddle-surfing is probably the fastest growing of all the "action sports" on Kauai.

  • Stand-up paddle surfing is fun and is easy to learn. It is also one of the very best ways to get into and stay in shape. It works the core of the body as well as the arms and legs and is a great way to exercise.

The island of Kauai is a very well-known island for surfing and for producing major Hawaiian surfers.

Let me just show you this right here. Kauai gets surf really kind of all around on all of its coastlines. The big surf happens from the north during the winter months, and then we get the south swells that happen during the summer months, but there's wrap-around all year long. It's not so big an island that a person who's a surfer can't go out and find surf pretty much every day of the year if they want. Certainly if you grow up on the island of Kauai, like I've known many people who have, they just learn to surf. It just comes naturally to them. It's something everybody does. It's kind of the sport there. People really become very good at surfing, and quite a number of world-class surfers have come from the island of Kauai.

You may not be interested in being necessarily a world-class surfer or surfing to that extent, but there is a lot of consistent surf that happens on Kauai. It's an ideal place on most days to learn how to surf. There's usually some protected areas and some places that just have consistently small swells that are perfect for surfing, kind of like this one here. That's a great swell to learn how to surf on. That's pretty much what's going to happen for you if you go out and learn how to surf on Kauai.

The way it works is that you'll go out with a surf school. They'll have a group of people. Well, actually you can choose. You can choose. You can go out with a group. Maybe there'd be six people or something like that with your surf instructors, and they'll sit you all down on the beach to begin with with a surfboard, and explain how you jump up on the board and explain safety things, explain how to get through the waves on your way out, explain how to paddle, all the rudimentary things that you need to know. This can happen as a group lesson with maybe six people, something like that, or it could be a semi-private with two people so you have a lot more interaction with your instructor. There's the instructor looking from behind on the wave and this guy. Or you could have a private lesson, so one instructor and one person. Now you're really learning quickly.

I'll interject at this point that for years and years, when I came to Hawaii, I was already grown up and already kind of not too good at balance and all that sort of thing. I didn't learn how to surf to begin with which happens. If you get the kids in the water to begin with, they just take to it and then they develop the skill. For me, it took me a really long time. I went out and tried to surf I don't know how many times, and really couldn't do it, sort of gave up for years. Then went to Kauai, and one day I signed up with a guy that was going to just help me privately. That was the ticket. He kept on telling me what I was doing wrong and making me do it again until I was exhausted, but I actually got up to surf in that session.

Maybe three times, I was up riding the wave into the shoreline, and that was a first for me. It's really helpful. These guys are really good. The private lessons are really the best, but if you've got kids, if you're really just kind of on that level where you're bringing kids out there, you're probably just fine with the group lesson because they're going to pick it up. It's shocking to me. My son Jake, the first time we ever went out on the waves, he rode the first wave in, like amazing, you know? Anyhow, if you've got kids, you want to bring them.

They get you out on the sand. They teach you all this stuff, and then they take you out into the waves. Then you go back and forth a few times until you're tired. Then you come back in, and that's it. That's your surf lesson. Sometimes they include a board that you can use afterwards if you want to continue to go out and do some more. Depends on the surf group that you go with. They're all just a little bit different. Kauai is a great place to do this, because it has some really nice consistent surf that is of a size that is perfect for learning how.
