Maui Tours To Lanai

The island of Lanai sits just 8 miles off the coast of Maui.  Because of its close proximity, tours on Lanai are very closely linked to the island of Maui.  Whether it be land tours of the island, snorkel tours off its shores or air tours above it, most to the Lanai Tours originate on Maui.  Many of these tours are offered here at discount pricing.
Lanai is about one-fifth the size of Maui and its highest mountain is only a little over 3000' in height so it does not draw as much rain as its close sister islands of Molokai or Maui.  Consequently it does not have the jungle landscape that can be found on either of those two islands and in fact it is somewhat arid in comparison.

What types of tours are available on Lanai?

  • Land tours and jeep rentals are available for you to check out the almost totally underpopulated 'outback' of the islands.  This consists of a series of dirt roads that criss-cross the western slopes of the island and lead you down to the remote beaches and coastlines in the region.  You can take a ferry ride from Lahaina on Maui over to Lanai for the day and either take a tour or rent a jeep to create your own excursion.
  • Snorkel tours are available from Maui that will take you over to explore the large expanse of coral formations that ring the island along with the attendant sea life.
  • Dolphin excursions also travel from Lahaina to Lanai to view the areas off Lanai that are often frequented by dolphins.  You can often see upwards of 100 dolphins in a single pod on these tours.
  • Ferry service goes over and back from Lahaina Harbor to Manele Harbor on Lanai four times a day and you can simply take the ride and perhaps visit the beautiful Manele Bay Hotel for lunch and a look around.
  • There are fabulous dive locations along the Lanai coastline and once again these dives can be reached by various dive operations originating on Maui.
  • Helicopter tours of the island can be arranged which usually include all of Maui County including also the island of Maui and Molokai.
  • Fixed wing planes can tour the island from the air on any one of a number of reasonably priced private flights.

This little video segment is going to be about the island of Lanai and the tours that we have there.

Lanai is a part of Maui County. Here's all four islands in Maui County. You've got Maui, Molokai, Lanai, and Kaho'olawe. Lanai's a fairly small island located about eight miles off the coast, about 2,000 feet in the center, a little tiny crater head on the very top that Lanai City is in, the only major city in the island. You can see it is circular. The main port is right over here, it's Manele Harbor and the beautiful bay next to it is Hulopoe Bay. That's where you would land and the only major road on the island takes you up to Lanai City and back. There are a lot of dirt roads however throughout the island that you can explore by Jeep.

The main form of transportation that we have between Maui and Lanai is by ferry. We have a ferry that goes from Lahaina, heads over to Manele Harbor. It goes over four times a day, starts early in the morning and last ones come back in late afternoon. You can get over there easily, a little bit over an hour ride each way. When you're there, there's a number of activities that you can do.

I guess I should mention that for years and years the entire island of Lanai was owned by the Dole Pineapple Company. It was one of the world's largest producers of pineapple. That ended perhaps 20 years ago and the island is now the home of two very large, beautiful hotels. One along the coastline here and then up at the very top. The top is more forested. It's pine trees and a little more lush and very, very, very beautiful. People go over there just to see the hotels, to have lunch, that sort of thing, but also one of the things that they've got over there are two beautiful golf courses, one on the top and one on the bottom. Golfers love them. These are Greg Norman-designed courses.

We arrange golf excursions which people can go on in the daytime. They'll leave from Lahaina, go over there. We arrange for the ferry, arrange for the tee time for your golf. You do golf, usually have lunch or something like that afterwards at one of the hotels and then head back. So it's a full day and a really, really nice day for sure.

The other thing that can happen there is that you can Rent-A-Car along with the ferry, so we organize that for you. Then you've got a Jeep really and then you cruise all the bad roads and see what you want to see and enjoy that.

By far the major emphasis in terms of activity that happens on Lanai has to do with the ocean surrounding it and primarily snorkeling tours. We have Snorkeling Tours that go from Lahaina or even Kaanapali and so on, over to Lanai. This coastline has one of the longest continuous reefs in Hawaii. Very, very beautiful coral formations and we have fish. We've got turtles and Dolphins are something that you'll see quite often along this coastline as well. The most popular of those trips are what we call half-day tour, maybe four, maybe five hours, getting you over there and then back again.

We also have whale watches that happen during the season that'll take you out close to Lanai as well, but the half-day Snorkels will get you out there. You'll snorkel at maybe two locations and then come back. For those of you that are really adventurous and really want a lot of marine intensity, I guess, you'd want to do the full day trip all the way around. We don't have as many boats that do this but you're really, really getting close to a lot of the sea life, immersing yourself into the wilds of Lanai and all the marine life that surround it. You can see just about anything on those trips. Those are usually on the smaller boats, kind of the fast ones. You need to be a person that wants to be on a boat like that all day long. You really have to have an adventurous spirit and a desire to really go out there and be on the water, but those are great so they circumnavigate the entire island and then come back.

The other thing that we have, a tour, we have one particular boat is the only one that does this but it's very famous, it's called the Trilogy. They do Snorkeling and so on on Lanai but they do things a little bit differently. They leave each day from Lahaina, they'll go over to Lanai. They'll land at the harbor at Manele and then you can walk a short distance over to Hulopoe Bay and you will be able to snorkel there. It's an underwater marine reserve so that's beautiful. Then there's a big giant lunch, fantastic that they have for you.

Then the other part of the day is taking a tour of Lanai, so you get in a van and they go up and they show you Lanai. So you come back with a real good feeling and understanding of what's up on Lanai, and also really have a chance to do some Snorkeling at a beautiful location as well. They will usually almost always put up the sails on the way back when we actually have some wind in the afternoon. You get a little bit of that going on.

Those are primarily the activities that we have in terms of Snorkeling. Lanai is also a very famous diving destination so there are many, many locations along the coast of Lanai where you can do snorkeling and depending upon the conditions of the day, the dive master and captain will take you to whatever the best situations there are. Cathedral's a very well known spot that's on Lanai that can be on the itinerary depending on what's going on. That's the major thing that we've got that happens on Lanai is the driving, and of course a lot of our Fishing Boats go out and they're cruising alone the coastline of Lanai. That's a big destination that we have as well but you of course never get on the island for those.

So that's pretty much it for the activities that are available to you on the island of Lanai.
