Maui Molokini Snorkeling Tours

Molokini Snorkeling tours offer one of the premier Snorkeling adventures in all of Hawaii.

Molokini Crater is actually the tip of an extinct volcano vent, barely peeking above the ocean's surface between Maui and Kahoolawe.

Learn more about Molokini Crater:

  • Visibility is often 150 feet, tropical fish are everywhere, and Molokini sheer cliffs and rugged beauty are the focus of professional photographers from all over the world.
  • Of all the activities we have sent people on over the years, none has been more popular or has provided more positive feedback than our Snorkel Trips to Molokini. People just love it! It's a perfect destination - only a forty-five to sixty-minute cruise out of Maalaea Harbor.
  • Molokini is an underwater Marine Preserve and Molokini Snorkel areas are protected.
  • Molokini is also a protected habitat for seabirds.

The bowl of Molokini Island Crater is teeming with marine life.

The colors and shapes of the fish are so beautiful and distinctive that visitors to our island find themselves returning to Molokini year after year in what has become for many a pilgrimage of sorts.

The only way to get to Molokini to Snorkel is by boat and there are lots:

Large Boats, small boats, power boats, Sail Boats - you name it, we have it. There are so many choices it can become confusing.

Here are a few of the key questions to ask yourself to help you (and help us) sort out what Molokini snorkel trip might be best for you.

  • Do you want a large boat that is stable in the water for your Snorkeling tour to Molokini?
  • Would you prefer a smaller, more personalized vessel with fewer people on board?
  • How about a zodiac raft trip for your Molokini snorkel?
  • Would you like to snorkel at Molokini and then go to a second location off the coast of Maui to Snorkel again?
  • How about taking advantage of the late morning trade winds and choose a Sail Boat for a refreshing sail home?
  • Would you like to leave from Maalaea Harbor, the small Kihei boat ramp, or Lahaina harbor?
  • Is price a factor? Molokini Snorkel prices vary considerably.

This is one of the most popular snorkeling destinations that we have anywhere in Hawaii, and it's located off the coast of Maui.

It's called Molokini.

Molokini lies about 4 miles off the coast of Maalaea Harbor and essentially, this crescent shape as you can kind of imagine it as the top of an extinct volcano that is kind of a big circle. A lot of it is underwater at this point, but this is what remains above the water. It's actually called a caldera, an underwater caldera. This is one of three that exist in the world. In the center of this beautiful geological formation is kind of a bowl, if you will. It's scooped out just a bowl and this is a protected area for fish and coral formations have been here for years. They're protected from the currents from most directions.

The tops of these ridges and so on are pretty sheer, they go up over a hundred feet and on the back wall here, you can see that it goes straight down. In fact, it was said that years ago King Kamehameha used to jump off of these areas in this direction down. It was kind of a sport that happened on the Hawaiians.

Anyway, this area is a protected underwater marine reserved. As such it is a very popular destination for people that want to come to do Snorkeling. We have many boats that come here, we have large boats, smaller boats, power boats, Sail Boats, and zodiacs, you name it, we've got them. Whatever type of boat you think is going to be appropriate for you. We probably have it for you, and the differences are if you want to be a little bit more stable in the water. You probably want a larger boat, if you want a little bit more excitement or adventure, maybe one of the zodiacs. Those types of boats.

There are often trips that go out in the morning and then some that go out in the afternoon. If you're serious about wanting to see Molokini, you really want to go there in the morning. Typically these tours will leave between 7 and 8 o'clock. It takes about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the speed of your boat to get out there. This is the calmest time of day. Generally speaking, we have the trade winds that come in. They may wrap around later in the morning, and it may get choppy but usually early morning it's glass. We'd like to get people out there in the morning. That's the single best time to go.

There are tours that you'll see, you can see advertised various places that they offer afternoon trips and then usually these are considerably less expensive as well. What is not noted in the advertisements is that it's an afternoon Molokini trip that the vast majority of the time never makes it to Molokini. It's just too windy out there, so what they end up doing is they can and they would go out to Molokini if it's really a nice flat day. It's just not the way the afternoons are. They end up going around the corner from Maalaea Harbor to McGregor Point or some other place where they snorkel along the cliffs of the coast of Maui. If you're doing Molokini, you really need to make it a morning trip.

Generally, these are 4-5 hours. The majority of boats that we have to go there, go out of Maalaea Harbor but we do have the Kihei boat ramp on the south side. You can't really see where Molokini is. It's pretty much right out here, and here's Maalaea Harbor. This is the vast majority of boats are going to come from here. Off the coast of Makena and Kihei, Kihei has a boat ramp. There are a few small boats like zodiacs that will leave out of here and go there, that's a pretty quick shot. In fact, we have some boats that can do that, just go out from maybe two and a half hours, get out to Molokini, do a little bit of Snorkeling and come back if you want a really short one. We do have a boat that goes out of Wailea as well that will take you there. We do even have one that goes out of Lahaina. The problem is, it's just too long to go all that distance. It just makes more sense to drive this distance from Maalaea Harbor, and then take a boat. Rather than taking a boat all the way there. That's where they go from.

Most of the boats that go out Molokini will go to Molokini and then the second location. The second location is generally off the Makena coastline here. There's an area that's often referred to as Turtle Town. There are beautiful reefs that are along here in Makena area, so you get to visit those and there are Turtles there that happened quite frequently.

I would say the majority of boats that we have will take you to Molokini, and then pull up the anchor and go to a second location off the coast of Makena, do another snorkel and then head back. We have some boats just go to Molokini and spend the entire day there or the entire morning, they don't go to a second location. That happens as well. You might also consider the notion that we do have some Sailboats that go out there. You're not going to have your sails up in the morning, there's no wind. They'll get you out to Molokini and you will enjoy that, maybe go over to the Makena area for the second snorkeling location. At that point which usually late morning, we do have some wind. They put their sails up and you can have a sail on the way back.

As far as what's provided for you, all the Snorkeling equipment, all the instruction, everything you need to know, you've got a crew that's looking over you. They'll do a headcount, they know exactly how many people are their people. In fact, some of the areas they give you little boundaries, they asked you to stay within so that they can keep track of you at Molokini. They are always making sure that everyone is accounted for and that you have everything that you want with regarding snorkeling and so on.

The majority of boats, almost all of them. If they're out for five hours, they're going to provide you with some type of a lunch and something to eat when you just get on the boat and so on. After you're out of the water, almost all of them will provide you with some type of refreshments, almost always adult beverages if you'd like, but certainly, for the kids, they've got all kind of drinks and that sort of thing too.

It's a morning excursion, 7 am to 12 pm or 7:30 am to 12:30 pm. It's a great thing to do in the morning, people have been doing this for years. They just absolutely love it! We fill up on these with all the boats, at times of year it's very difficult to get people on them. The pricing I should also mention varies considerably and the type of that boat or vessel that you're on varies considerably to a lot of boats do discounts. A lot of other boats just stick to their regular pricing. You've got better boats, and you've got lesser boats. That's kind of the way it works but we have dozens of boats that go out there.

There's a big potpourri of choices and we're here to help you to kind of figure out which might be the best for you, and what days might work best for you. That's Molokini it's the single most popular Snorkeling destination that we have in Maui.
