It was a wonderful experience.

No guarantee on weather. We got one of the three days per month when it is totally socked in with clouds, wet, windy, and zero view of sunrise and of Haleakala. Tour guide was great. Bus was comfy and has big viewing windows. Arrangements easy. Breakfast was good. But, without any vision, the tour is an expensive bust. Good luck if you go for this....

2 suggestions:
Arriving before sunrise we had an absolute fantastic star sky. Being there
watching the stars in complete darkness was however disturbed by people using
their mobiles constantly, then you lose your dark adaptation for several
minutes.
On return you could possibly drop the people picked up earliest as the first.
This would make the bus ride easier, avoiding lots of left hand turns in the
busy traffic.2 suggestions:
I was picked up on time about 3:15 am at the last pickup location near Whole Foods. After that, we had a short bathroom break near a convenience store, as well as the option to buy coffee & snacks. We had Wayne as our driver and guide and he was great! He provided many interesting facts the entire way, pointing out various sites and explaining history and culture. Well worth getting a guided tour.

Sunrise was magnificent even with the biting wind and cold. There were a lot of people so don't be afraid to go around to various viewpoints to find a good one. After sunrise the shop was open to purchase mementos. Hot coffee and pastries were provided on the bus. We then visited the summit higher up and visitor center further down. There were several bathroom breaks which was appreciated.

We drove back into town and our breakfast was served in what looked like a conference room at the back of a restaurant or hotel, it was yummy and included juice and coffee/tea. I was dropped off at about 9:30 am so that was a little over 6 hours total.

This was a fantastic tour made even greater by our bus driver, Netti. She was so great, I cantsnake even begin to tell you all the ways she enhanced our trip!! Please let her employers know how fantastic she made the trip for all four of us.

I was reluctant to sign up for the tour as I didn't want to pay so much when I could just drive up ourselves. But after seeing the road - I am sooo glad we took the tour. Our tour started really cloudy and windy, but our tour guide, Nettie, had said not to focus on seeing just the sunrise but the whole picture - landscape and cloudscape, so we did. DRESS WARM, like in layers warm!! It was Freezing - and I'm from Maine so I know cold weather (we brought hats and mittens from home just for this tour), we could have used a blanket to wrap up in! (There were people up there in shorts....!! Ca-razy! :) ) Didn't think we'd see the sun, but about 10 mins after it started to rise, the clouds cleared out enough that we had a beautiful sunrise. Nettie was very knowledgeable and you could see/hear her love & respect for the sacred mountain. We had a very nice breakfast too at a golf course when we got back down. Definitely recommend this tour, and feel blessed to have had Nettie as our guide.

This was a TERRIBLE tour. Even though they confirmed with us the night
before they did not pick us up! I cannot believe Tom is still
reccommending this tour company. When we got left with no pickup and I
suggested Tom may want to 'compensate' us in some manner I was told 'but that
would come right out of Tom's pocket'. So I'm really disappointed in Toms
Barefoot tours. Other than this complete disappointment, Tom Tours has
ALWAYS come through for us! This tour company did not even contact us - we
had to contact them. DO NOT TAKE THIS TOUR. Complete Disappointment.
Company has no morals to leave us at the road at 3am with no pickup and no
apology or explanation!
