When people think of water sports the idea of tubing down an irrigation flume seldom comes to mind, but on Kauai one of the premier water sports events is the Kauai Backcountry Tubing. This unusual tour is essentially a ride down a flume system that was built in the early nineteen-hundreds to carry water from the wet regions of Kauai's central district to the sugar cane plantations on the southern shores. The cane fields have long since been gone but the flume system still exists and is now used to carry willing fun seekers on a wild journey on this flume system through tunnels and over trestles on a miles long ride which is so much fun that it instantly has the effect of changing everyone into a child. It is impossible to go on Kauai Backcountry Tubing and not find yourself laughing out loud.
