One of the most unusual if not unique tours available on Kauai is the Kauai Backcountry Tubing. Essentially what Kauai Backcountry Tubing does is to have participants float on an inner tube down a system of irrigation flumes. These flumes are perhaps ten feet or so wide and fill up with about three feet or so of water. Their original intention was to bring water from the extremely wet central region of Kauai to the dryer coastal regions on the east side to irrigate the sugar cane fields. The sugar cane fields are now all gone but the flumes still exist gently carrying water via a slow gravity flow for miles down the flume system. All the excitement begins when you throw your inner tube in the flume system and gently travel a few miles downhill with other members of your group. This turns out to be more fun than you can believe and Kauai Backcountry Tubing is now so popular that you often have to make bookings for this event weeks in advance.
