What is the best sunscreen to use in the water?

Oct 7, 2018 | General Information

This is a question that we get asked almost every day. Before we get into our recommendations it is important to note that no matter what sunscreen you use it is always a good idea to reapply if possible. Inevitably there will be times when you will go for extended periods without being able to reapply but please do your best to reapply your sunscreen as much as possible (especially on children who are going into and out of the water frequently). Throughout lifetime’s worth of testing a variety of different waterproof sunscreens on every island in Hawaii our staff has come to the conclusion the waterproof sunscreens that work the best are Dr Martin’s and Neutrogena.

Dr. Martin’s Sunscreen
This sunscreen was actually developed the island of Maui’s leading skin doctor whose name is Dr Martin. He designed this sunscreen to be able to handle his extended surfing sessions that can sometimes last for hours. I like this sunscreen the best but some people do complain that it is too thick and prefer something lighter. If you’re looking for maximum protection, this is it.

Neutrogena (A Lighter Option)
If the Dr Martin’s is too thick for your preference you may want to try Neutrogena’s line. This sunscreen works pretty good but if you’re going all day you will need to reapply. These ones are a bit lighter on the skin but in my experience they do not provide protection for as long as the Dr Martin’s.
