"I've already been to Hawaii so many times. I've done all the different activities". This is a popular refrain. How about doing something interesting, educational and different! If you're planning to visit Maui perhaps this is something you might enjoy doing:
Visit the Aromatherapy Foundation of Maui in Olinda in Upcountry Maui and participate in an aromatic distillation of some of the 1000+ aromatic plants that are grown there. Each Friday at 9:00am, Tom Barefoot (yes that Tom Barefoot) leads select groups of 10 persons or less through the plants on property gathering the ones that will be distilled for the day and then guides participants through the process of actually distilling the plant matter into essential oils and aromatic waters called hydrosols. A beautiful handmade copper still made in Portugal is used and the results are an aromatic delight. Tom will lead you through the process from beginning to end and explain the process thoroughly.
This 3 hour activity will have you leaving the Foundation's spectacular view property by noon and give you plenty of time to peruse the upcountry town of Makawao or visit any of the sites Upcountry Maui has to offer.
By the time you're done, you will not only have a good understanding of the extraordinary process used to make these oils but you will actually leave with a small spray bottle of the actual hydrosol that was made that day. These unique organic boutique distillations of aromatics such as lavender, rosemary, geranium, lemon verbena, patchouli, lemon grass and many others infused in pure Maui seawater are very high quality and are a refined and sought-after commodity.
