Haleakala Crater is on our must list of things to do on Maui. It appears that we have the option to either hike it or see it by horseback. Both options will take a long time. Which do you think will ultimately be more strenuous? We're concerned that it might be difficult spending four to five hours on a saddle?
If you are not used to riding, you probably will find yourself adjusting your position in the saddle frequently on the crater tour but this would pale in comparison to the exertion that is required to actually walk all the way down into the crater and back out again. Either way Haleakala Crater is definitely a worthwhile outing but seeing it via horseback is probably going to be the easier venue.
