One of the most popular tours on Maui is the bike tour down the volcano. The most popular way to do it is to leave very early in the morning before the sun comes up. This is done so you can see the sunrise on the crater before you begin the ride down. The sunrise from the crater is a bit different from a sunrise anywhere else. The summit of Haleakala stands 10,023 feet above sea level in the middle of the largest ocean on the planet. The light pollution here is minimal and the stars are as bright as you will find anywhere. As you look towards the rising sun you will see the mountains of the Big Island in the distance on your right and nothing but the big Pacific ocean to your left. Directly in front of you sits the Haleakala Crater which at first is completely veiled in the darkness of the night. It is an amazing experience that is definitely worth experience at least once in your life. After we finished watching the sunrise we set out on our bike ride which took us through the beautiful "Upcountry" portion of Maui down towards the North Shore. We stopped and took photos at a few different spots, and had breakfast afterwards. It was quite a wonderful way to spend the morning.
