Are the sunrise bike trips worth it?

I was looking through your site and I saw that there are sunrise tours and midday tours that are available. Is it really worth it to wake up and be picked up at 2AM to see the sunrise at the top of the mountain or am I better off going on the midday tour?

Answer:

I'm going to preface my answer by saying that you're the only one that can decide what's right for you, but I will give you a rundown on what each tour entails so you can have the most information to make the best decision.

Option 1: The Sunrise Bike Tour

The sunrise tours take you to the top of the mountain where you will view the sun come up from the top of the volcano over the Haleakala Crater. The mountain of Haleakala stands 10,000 feet tall and on a clear day can provide a view of over 120 miles out to sea. If the weather cooperates, the sunrise from the crater is one of the most beautiful phenomenons in the state of Hawaii. After the sunrise the group gets back into the van and goes down to the entrance to the national park where they begin the bike riding segment of the tour. This continues down until the Makawao/Paia area where the ride will end. (more)

Option 2: The Midday Bike Tour

The midday tour starts at a more reasonable time then the sunrise tour. It can either take you directly to the top where you will view the crater, or it can skip the crater and go straight to the park entrance for the bike ride (depending on which midday tour you choose to do). The bike ride will take you from the entrance of the Haleakala National Park to the Makawao/Paia area where the bike ride will end. (more)

One thing to consider is that if you will be coming from the United States mainland you will have the time change to deal with when you get here. The distance you travel to get here will leave your body thinking that it should get up 2-6 hours earlier then normal. This generally lasts only a day or two but if you do the sunrise tour right when you get here it is actually easier to get up then you would think. That being said, some people are just not early morning people and would prefer not to be up so early on their vacation which is why the day tour is also a popular option. Either way, between the amazing views and the relaxing downhill bike ride I'm sure you'll have a great time.

For years Hawaii bike tours have been a main-stay of the activities available for the visitors coming to the islands. Perhaps no island provides more bike tours to visitors than the island of Maui and this is all due to the phenomenon that occurred in the early eighties with the advent of the Haleakala downhill bicycle adventures.
