Night Manta Ray Excursion - Wahine Charters on Hawaii
We start our evening departing from Honokohau harbor on our comfortable U.S. Coast Guard certified vessel. The Wicked Wahine is a custom-built 29 foot power boat. She has comfortable padded seating for 16, but we do not take more than 14 guests at a time. Upon arrival at the manta site, our captain (who has a Bachelor's degree in Fisheries and Marine Science) will give a brief talk about the mantas and what to expect. You'll get to watch the sun set over the Pacific Ocean and maybe if you're lucky you'll even see the elusive green flash. Then you will enter Kona's warm, clear, and well illuminated water with our guide who will escort you through the entire experience. You will hold on to our custom light board while the rays approach. The lights on our board attract the plankton that the mantas feed on. Throughout the experience you will float on the surface and watch the seemingly choreographed performance of our mantas-- some with wingspans that are larger than 13 feet. In addition to the manta rays you will likely see schools of fish, SCUBA divers and lots of other snorkelers. We sometimes call this the Las Vegas of night dives because of all the lights and people. If you want to avoid the crowds, you might want to try Wahine Charters' Late Night Manta Snorkel instead. There are generally a lot less boats and divers in the water during that tour.

The trip with Dave and Mel was amazing and was beyond our expectations. We all loved seeing the manta rays scoop up the plankton as they gracefully swam so close to us that they touched our wetsuits. The soup after the swim topped off the trip. Thanks Mel and Dave
This was the coolest thing I have ever done, and I have done a lot. The crew on the boat was outstanding, were able to meet every need we had. My mother has very bad vision and they had a pair of prescription goggles that worked perfectly for her. my children are not very strong swimmers, so we requested life vests for them. My daughter got scared while we were swimming with the mantas and Capt. Dave swam her a good distance back to the boat. Oh yeah, when we got out of the water, we had hot chocolate and the best pineapple ever waiting for us. Thinking about doing the wild dolphin snorkel while we are still here this week!
