Late Night Manta Ray Excursion - Wahine Charters on Hawaii
Join Wahine Charters for a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience the graceful nighttime ballet of Kona's giant manta rays. Kona is the only location on the planet where you can get in the water at night and have an over 90% chance of encountering these gentle giants. We provide wet suits, snorkel gear, fresh island fruit, bottled water, Hawaiian juices, sodas, and Chef Randy's hot soup of the night.
We start our evening departing from Honokohau harbor on our comfortable U.S. Coast Guard certified vessel. The Wicked Wahine is a custom-built 29 foot power boat. She has comfortable padded seating for 16, but we do not take more than 14 guests to ensure that it is comfortable on board. There is a toilet and protected cabin for those days when the ocean is less than cooperative. Wahine Charters is a family owned and operated company.
Upon arrival at the manta site, our captain (who has a Bachelor's degree in Fisheries and Marine Science) will give a brief talk about the mantas and what to expect. Usually by this time the other tour boats will have left the area, leaving the mantas to the passengers of the Wicked Wahine. Next, the group will enter Kona's warm, clear, well illuminated water with our experienced guide who will escort you as you hold on to the custom-built light board. The lights on our board attract the plankton that the mantas feed on. Float on the surface and watch the seemingly choreographed performance of our mantas, some of which have wingspans of more than 13 feet. You will also likely see large schools of fish, squid, and sometimes even a dolphin will make an appearance. On the way home, enjoy the stars while sipping on Chef Randy's hot soup of the night.

Just wow! Danielle and Mel were fantastic! I was scared until Mel jumped in bold as can be. The mantas were so majestic! They swam in loops feeding on the plankton that was attracted by the lights on the snorkel board, sometime so close that they brushed up against me! We had plenty of time in the water and hot homemade tomato and basil soup when we got out. I felt a little queasy from the rocking of the boat but Mel gave me some ginger candy and told me to keep my eyes on the shoreline and I felt better. She made a point to check on me twice on the way back to the dock too. This was an adventure I'll never forget and I can't wait to share it with my family some day. Thank you to Wahine Charters, Danielle and Mel!
