Waipio Black Sand Beach Hike - Hawaiian Walkways
Relax and enjoy the drive to the historical town of Honoka'a for a restroom break and time to enjoy the famous 'Honoka'a Boy' town environment. During the course of the drive, a Japanese and English speaking guide will explain the history of Kona, the volcanoes, Waimea, Honoka'a and Waipi'o as taught to the guide by elder Kupuna. You will have thirty (30) minutes to explore Honoka'a town and as part of the history it includes information regarding the filming of 'Honoka'a Boy', the movie. You will be able to see actual places of interests and buildings that were in the movie. From the Honoka'a area, you will be given a backpack, bottled water, and rain gear if needed. You will then be transported in a 4WD vehicle down Waipi'o Valley road to the valley floor. Everyone will hike out to the beach, cross the river and head to Paka'alana Heiau, the first Heiau in the islands. There, your guide will give you the history of Waipio Valley the legends that are associated with this area and the history of the first thirteen kings. You will have the opportunity to view the beautiful Hiilawe waterfall from the floor of the valley and spend time taking in the sights and sounds of the Waipi'o Valley floor. After an offering and chant a prayer, we eat and then return across the river to the beach. You can then take pictures or play in the water for over an hour. Total time spent on the floor of Waipi'o Valley will be almost three and one half (3.5) hours. We will then proceed to exit Waipi'o Valley and head to the Honoka'a office for a restroom break before your return.
