Learn about the geography, geology and natural history of the island on the drive up the mountain. First stop to acclimate to the altitude is at the Onizuka Visitors Center at 9,000 ft. Guests will be served a soup and sandwich supper, and be fitted with parkas and gloves before continuing on the steep .5 hour drive to the top of Mauna Kea (13,796 ft). On the summit, your guide will point out the observatories as they begin to open their domes and rotate into position. Then the tour descends to mid mountain where using a large portable telescope you'll observe the treasures of the night sky and sip on hot chocolate. We had a fantastic time on the summit tour. Our guide, David, was SO knowledgeable explaining the various types of lava, vegetation, and animals we saw along the way, along with the history of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. Lasagna and brownies were good as we stopped at the visitors center. The summit time was spectacular and the star gazing was so wonderful with the guides explaining the constellations. We highly recommend this tour.

This was a fantastic experience. The sunset was beautiful and the stars were amazing. We could even see the glow from the volcano through the lower clouds when we were star gazing. They showed us several different types of stars with the telescope. It was a great experience and I highly recommend it.
