Hakalau means "Many Perches". This was named by Hawaiians long ago and it is still recognized as a critical bird habitat today. It was the first National Wildlife Refuge in the nation established primarily for forest birds. Species include Akepa, Akiapolaau, Amakihi, Apapane, Elepaio, Hawaii Creeper, Iiwi, Io, Oamao, and Pueo. Guides know the birds by ear and are current on latest sightings. Visit the best locations to see native birds in their endemic forest habitat. Tour boasts new Mercedes 4WD Sprinters for intimate groups. With leather captains seats, usb ports and roof mounted awnings you will be riding in style! The trip length is approximately 11 hours round-trip from Hawaii Forest and Trail Headquarters. Hike is rated as easy to moderate.
Operates: Monday-Friday. Approximate times 6:30am to 6:30pm by reservation only (permit allows 12-18 trips per year).

Duration: Full day. 11 -12 hours round-trip from Kona headquarters.
Equipment: Mercedes 4WD Sprinters, walking sticks, binoculars, day packs, warm wear and rain ponchos.
Capacity: Minimum of 6 to confirm a tour and a maximum of 9.

Restrictions: This tour has a 48 hour cancellation policy. This means that once you're within 48 hours of the start time, the tour the tour is non refundable. If you choose to cancel before this time, the standard 3% cancellation fee will apply. If the vendor needs to cancel your tour because of weather, a mechanical issue or any other reason you will receive a 100% refund of the price you paid. Departure times may vary. Guests should not be physically challenged or unable to hike on uneven or rocky terrain. You may encounter wet and muddy conditions. Weather can be cool and wet. Children under 3 years old must be carried in a backpack carrier. There's a 14 day cancellation policy. Group rates are 10 people per van plus a $125.00 gratuity per vehicle. This activity is not accessible by wheelchair or walker.
