BIg Island Bike Tours

Big Island Bike Tours are one of the best ways to enjoy the sights, sounds and yes, even the scents of the island. Riding slowly and casually through the roadways of a volcano bike experience gives you a chance to 'take it all in'. You are going fast enough to cover some ground but are going slow enough to stop in an instant and observe the moment. Many of our Big Island Bike tours are offered at discount pricing.

Since the volcanic events which first occurred in April of 2018, the role of Big Island Bike Tours have been evolving.

Every tour company that takes guests on a volcano bike tour through the area of the recent live volcanoes has been effected by the volcanic events. The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park was closed down because of the danger of the flowing lava and all tour companies doing sightseeing in the area had to make adjustments. The bike companies have been no exception.
  • The Big Island bike tours alter their tour itineraries to accommodate with the times. If areas are closed off because of the volcanoes they move to new areas to see the sights. As new spots become available to enter they adjust.
  • One thing is certain: the bike companies are on the cutting edge of the perimeters and morph with their tours as required.
  • The day that you take a bike tour will be the day that you can see the most that is possible.
  • Although many areas of the Volcanoes National Park have been closed off many others have been reopened and other areas likely yet to come.
For most people, the recent past volcanic events which can be on a bike tour on the Big Island will be once in a lifetime experiences. When you finish your day's excursion you will return with a greater depth of knowledge than you could ever imagine. Grab your helmet and prepare for an adventure!

All of the volcanic activity happening on the Big Island in 2018 really put a hardship on many of the activity companies there. This was particularly true of the bike tour companies who in many cases found themselves cut off from the places they had taken tours for years. The fumes emitted from the volcano at times also made things difficult so it has taken a while for them to get their feet back on the ground (tires back on the ground) but they are totally grounded at this point. These tours are one of the most fun ways to explore the volcanic area as they are a combination of biking on mostly fairly flat roads and a short amount of hiking as well. This is so much more different than visiting the volcanic zone from the inside of a van or tour bus. This puts you out there right in the middle of it, seeing, feeling, breathing, hearing and moving slowly through it. You feel like you've really had the experience.

So Bike Tours on the Big Island are all about the volcano. They all take place in the Volcanoes National Park. This is found over in Kilauea on the slopes of Mau Loa just above Hilo and this is one of the most incredible areas to actually do a sightseeing tour via bicycle. It makes all the difference in the world.

Let me first show you where this is. Hopefully. So here's the Big Island and the Kilauea volcano, the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, is in this area right here. And so what's going to happen is that there's a couple different companies and a couple different types of tours that you can do. We have tours that will actually pick you up in Hilo and then bring you up here, and we have tours that will bring you from Kelowna or from Waikoloa and then bring you across to this area as well.

But on either one of them if you're going from the Kelowna side you're going to actually have a tour of the various places that you're going to be seeing on the way across, so you've got that aspect of it. And the same thing, a bit shorter though, coming from Hilo, you're gonna get a sightseeing tour out to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

But the whole point on both of these is that when you get there you're gonna switch from a van onto some bikes, and actually cruise through this area for the most part on bikes. And really get to see that area in a way that is really unique from the standpoint of a bike.

So much nicer in may ways to cruise through this area and to see it, to absorb it, to take it in on a bicycle that's outside and in the air. It's like a hike but a little bit faster right? You're not in a van, you're not enclosed, you're not just looking through a window, but you're really out there and you can see it. You can smell it. You can kind of feel the atmosphere surrounding the volcano as you're going through these areas. It brings out all the sensory perceptions of what it's like to be at the volcano. I love this way to do it and the park is not so large that it's too big to see a lot of what you want to see via a bike.

So you're partially gonna be seeing it by van, partially be seeing it by bike, but there's a lot to see there. This is an area that we have active lava flows. We've got Halemaumau craters, so you're going to be up at the rim, you're gonna be looking at that. Everywhere you go you've got these steam vents that are just kind of coming up from everywhere. You've got, depending upon what's happening with the lava, you might be lucky enough to get actually up close enough to lava to be able to see it as it kind of creeps.

Here in Hawaii we don't have that explosive type of volcano. It's more of an oozing kind that kind of emits lava and it just kind of slowly creeps along. You can oftentimes get fairly close to it and that may happen on one of these as well.

You'll be able to go up and enjoy the Jaggar museum, which has all the exhibits about the volcano and things that you'll want to see. This is also kind of the area that they have all the seismic activity that they can register all the many, many, many earthquakes that happen throughout the course of days and weeks that aren't even perceptible in many cases, but there's lots of activity born from the fact that we've got the volcano that's happening and emerging from the bottom. So you've got this instability of the earth that it's measuring.

Anyway, there's so much that's very, very interesting to see and to understand through this area. The bike trips are primarily on fairly level ground. There's not an incredible amount of up and down so you don't have to worry about that. So you're just really kind of cruising through on mountain bikes. Some even have like 21 speed mountain bikes, that kind, and others, not quite as fancy but they're gonna be adequate for you to really participate in seeing this great natural phenomenon that we have in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

So these are an excellent tour. In some ways they're so much better than either hiking or just taking a tour in a van. It's one of the things that we really like to recommend to clients. Most people have the capability of doing this. If you can ride a bike, you're probably in good shape, good enough shape, to be able to take one of these tours on these bikes of the park.

For years Hawaii bike tours have been a main-stay of the activities available for the visitors coming to the islands. Perhaps no island provides more bike tours to visitors than the island of Maui and this is all due to the phenomenon that occurred in the early eighties with the advent of the Haleakala downhill bicycle adventures.
