Maui Snorkel Tours

Maui snorkel tours cover a lot of territory on the Maui activity landscape. In fact it is safe to say the the category of Maui snorkel tours is the very largest of any activity category on the island and this is because of the immense interest of the Maui visitors. It is also because it not only covers simply snorkeling charters but many other categories of interest as well that also include snorkeling within the tour. Dolphin tours, kayak tours, Molokini tours, sailing charters, many tours to Lanai, other water sports packages and even some hiking tours will include snorkeling during the course of the day.
In the following few paragraphs we will make Maui snorkeling tours very easy to understand by providing information on the best snorkel spots, the best time of year and the best time of day to go on your snorkel charter, what types of fish you will see, what variations of coral can be found, what you can expect in terms of Maui's water temperatures when you are snorkeling and the main reasons visitors take Maui snorkel tours. Many of our Maui snorkeling options are offered at discounted pricing.
These are the reasons Maui visitors find so much enjoyment in snorkel tours:
  • Maui has Protected Underwater Marine Reserves that are ideal for snorkel charters and not only have an abundance of marine life but also generally great visibility as well. Three fantastic marine reserves in Maui County are Molokini, Honolua Bay and Hulopoe Bay on Lanai.
  • Maui snorkeling is fun because the ocean waters surrounding Maui and its neighbor islands of Lanai and Molokini are comfortably warm. The average water temperature generally only between a comfortable 74 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the year.
  • Maui snorkeling locations are often teeming with beautiful coral formations and colorful tropical fish.
  • The close proximity to Maui of the islands of Lanai and Molokini provide some of the very best snorkeling locations and snorkeling conditions to be found in the state.
  • It is easy to learn how to snorkel and the Maui snorkel charters will teach you how. Also learn about why Full-Face snorkel masks are in the news in Hawaii.
  • Another big allure is the fact that discount snorkeling tours are often quite available on Maui through out the seasons.

Is taking a Maui snorkel charter better at certain times of the year or at certain times of day?

  • Maui Snorkel Tours depart all year long. Obviously it is better to go on a snorkel charter when the weather is excellent and the ocean conditions are the most pristine. Generally speaking, the summer months are usually storm free and make for the most ideal conditions. Winter months, just like on the mainland, are when we typically have storms and these obviously are not a great time to go snorkeling however the time between storms in the winter provide some of the most beautiful days of the year and some of the very best conditions for snorkeling.
  • As far as the time of the day to go snorkeling, the morning time is usually the best. This is when the oceans are quite often the calmest and the viability the greatest.

What will you see on the Maui snorkel Charters?

  • On your Maui snorkeling adventure you will see many types of colorful coral the most common of them being cauliflower coral which is usually brown or green but can also be a rose color, lobe coral which blooms in large mounds in protected shallow and deeper waters, and finger coral which is generally found in reefs at 15' in depth.
  • The list of reef fish you might find on your Maui snorkel is seemingly endless but probably includes some of these categories of reef fish: Parrotfish, Wrasse, Filefish, Butterfly fish, Angel fish, Damselfish, Triggerfish, Eels, Unicorn fish, Hog fish, Surgeon fish, Cardinal fish, Soldier fish, Squirrel fish, Sanperch, Scorpion fish, Frog fish, Hawk fish, Lizard fish, Goatfish, Mullet, Puffer and Groupers.
  • Some of the larger marine life you may see on or near the surface on your Mauisnorkel tour could be Green Sea Turtles, Bottlenose Dolphin, Spinner Dolphin or the benign White Tip Reef Shark.

Here are some great spots the Best Maui Snorkel Tours will take you!

  • Molokini always tops the list as the most popular place to snorkel. Molokini is a small, crescent shaped inlet island located about 4 miles off the coast of Maui. The snorkeling conditions here are generally excellent in the mornings before the normal trade wind conditions arise. Afternoon trips here can also be good but the likelihood of wind-free and calm conditions is much less than in the mornings.
  • Turtle Town is also a popular place on the itinerary of many snorkel tours and it is most frequently visited in tandem with a Molokini snorkel tour. This spot is located just off the coast of Wailea and is an area frequented by the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle.
  • La Perouse Bay and the Kanaio Coastline are visited by Maui ·norkeling adventures that can easily and swiftly travel the distance between MaalaeaHarbor and this bay and coastline. There are not many boats that have this capability so this tour is not as available as tours to Molokini. Some smaller boats and rigid-hulled rafts can also leave out of the Kihei Boat Ramp which is much more accessible to these areas.
  • Honolua Bay off the northern coast of West Maui is a protected marine reserve and is one of the best places to snorkel on Maui during the summer months. In the winter Honolua Bay is frequently battered by large surf and is a favorite spot for Maui big wave surfers. During the summer months the bay is calm and ideal for snorkeling. Most of the boats that visit Honolua Bay for snorkeling will depart from either Kaanapali or Lahaina Harbor.
  • The coast off Lanai will provide some of the most interesting and varied snorkeling to be found in Maui County. Many Maui snorkeling tours will leave from Lahaina Harbor or Kaanapali Beach and visit the Lanai coastlines which, in addition to large reefs and beautiful fish will also give you the best opportunity on Maui to see dolphins.
  • Coral Gardens is an area a couple miles west of Maalaea Harbor and is located along the cliffs in the coastline and is an area that is well protected from the trade winds and any winds that are not blowing directly from the south.  It is an area of beautiful coral gardens and marine life of all kinds.
  • Olowalu is an area along the coastline equidistant beween Lahaina and Maalaea Harbors.  It is an area that is very rich in marine life and has beautiful areas of coral.  This location and an area about one-half mile east toward Maalaea called 'Thousand Peaks' are very similar and many of the boats from both harbors will often bring their visitors here for great snorkeling on the ocean side of the reef.

Tom Barefoot's Tips
  • Tom's Tips - Maui Snorkeling Tours

Maui offers up many snorkeling tours going to many different destinations. If there was one general principle that would apply to them all it would be to do your snorkeling in the morning, the earlier the better. Generally speaking the prevailing trade winds are non existent in the early morning hours and then tend to gain strength about mid-morning and by the afternoon they have accelerated to a 'full blow'. The tours that generally depart in the afternoon hours like the afternoon Molokini tours (which almost never go to Molokini but to Coral Gardens instead) are designed to make use of natural wind blocks that can be tucked in to to avoid the winds and find calm water... read more.

Video Transcript

Of all the categories of activities that we offer on the Island of Maui, the one that is the most popular of all is snorkeling.

It's been that way since day one and why not? The conditions here are perfect to get in the ocean. The temperature is maybe 74 to 79 or 80 degrees year round, extremely temperate. We have some beautiful snorkeling locations.

We have underwater marine reserves like Molokini and Honolua Bay, Holopopa Bay and Lanai. It is something that everybody seems to want to get out at least one time, get in the water and see something really interesting and really nice. We've got lots and lots of different boats, different sizes, different companies that go to all these various places. All that diversity makes for all the interest that we have in snorkeling on Maui.

Where do they go? Let's take a look at the map really quick here and take a peak here. Here's Maui County. The most popular areas that we have, I guess the number one of them right here ... You can't quite see it on the map, but about four miles off the coast here of Maui is the Island of Molokini. We have lots of different boats that go out to Molokini.

It's primarily a morning thing. All the best weather conditions are in the morning, as they are, generally speaking, throughout Maui County. You'll probably want to go in the morning if you want to be doing some snorkeling. We do get wind chop and wave conditions that happen in the afternoon quite often so morning is usually the best time. Molokini is a major area that we have. There is a special section in the video section that we have that talks about Molokini exclusively so you might want to check that out on our website.

Another location that we snorkel is around the back side, we call this the back side of Maui here. There's an area called Kanaio and this is where we also have the La Perouse Bay area. As a rule, we have less boats that go in there so it's a little bit more remote, a little bit more private. Lots of fish and coral formations. One of the things that we do have on this coastline that's really fun is the Dolphins quite often. That is a place that they'll hang out so you get a chance to see them. The shore line, we have some caves back in there and beautiful views of Haleakala and Kaupo area from there.

As we go around this side, probably the most notable area that we have over here is the underwater marine reserve up on the very top, Honolua Bay. This is just one of my favorite places to snorkel, very, very beautiful. Beautiful coral formations and fish but just the bay, itself, is very picturesque and gorgeous. It is primarily a place that you'd want to go in the summer time. In the winter time, we have a tendency to have the big surf that comes in and Honolua Bay, you might know, is a very famous Surfing Spot, but not in the summers. In the summers, it's great for snorkeling. In winters, it's great for surfing. Anyway, that's a location for snorkeling.

Then there's also this Island of Lanai, which we can depart from either Lahaina or Kaanapali or even some that come out of Maalaea Harbor that go to Lanai. This is a great place to snorkel. There's a number of different snorkeling locations all the way along this area. One of the largest fully intact reefs in Hawaii is this reef that happens here in Lanai. You've got these great coral formations but then you also have all the different fish. That is also an area that you're going to be seeing or have a greater likelihood of seeing Dolphins. We have a lot of half-day tours that will take you out over to Lanai. You'll go up and down the coast here and then back to Lahaina, usually.

We also do have some full-day trips that will circumnavigate the entire island, which is kind of neat. You have to be in the mood to be on a boat for a full day. These are a little bit more adventuresome. Some people would find that a little bit too much and other people just can't get enough of it. Certainly, marine intensive. These would be the most marine intensive of the snorkeling trips that we have. You'll see a lots of different life forms of marine life and maybe even a shark or a manta, turtles and all the reef life and that sort of thing. Then they go all the way around and back to Lahaina. Those are more of a full day.

We've got half-day kinds of things, Molokini, four hours, five hours, half-day trips to Lanai. We've got full-day trips to Lanai. Those trips up to Honolua Bay are going to be more in the half-day area. Those are some of the beautiful places that we have.

Now there's another section that we talk about kayaking but if you're talking about snorkeling, we do snorkel off Kayaks and those are a fun way to see the ocean, too. That's another possibility for you.

Then one final thing I'll leave you with is a number of the boats we have, in addition to just using snorkeling gear, which is very simple to use. I should have mentioned that all the boats are going to explain how to operate the snorkeling gear. You'll be an expert in five minutes. Just a couple of things to know.

There's a few of the boats that we have that do Snuba as well. That's a combination of diving and snorkeling where you're out on a snorkel boat and you've got tanks that you breathe from that are floating on the surface of the ocean. Then you've got, instead of a backpack with tanks on, you've just got a hose that comes down from those tanks. You breathe through that hose. You're not going down very far on this. Maybe you're going ten or 15 feet at the most, I would think. You're at that level and you're snorkeling and you're not having to come back up. You're not on the surface. You're down below. You're essentially there for the tank of air. Those are a little bit more expensive and only on some boats, but it's a special little adaptation to the snorkeling that we do.

Anyway, snorkeling has many locations, many different boats, large boats, small boats, power boats, Sail Boats. There'll be a boat that's going to be comfortable for you. It is just excellent conditions on most days. Make sure you go out in the morning, if you can. Afternoons can be nice, too, but generally speaking, the mornings are going to be better. You will definitely have a great time on one of your many, many Maui snorkeling trips.

Hawaii snorkeling is by far the single most popular category of activities to be found in Hawaii. One reason for this is that snorkeling in Hawaii is often a component of many different types of tours found on any individual island such as many of the dolphin watches, whale watches, diving tours, raft excursions and even in some cases dinner cruises.
