Luau in Maui

Organizing your luau in Maui should be your very first activity concern. Way too often, if you do not have this in mind from the beginning, you lose out on your special - luau in Maui - evening. Remember that Maui hosts the most renown luaus in the state and some of them are booked up for weeks on end. No, not every luau in Maui is booked up that far in advance, but try coming to Maui during the busy seasons and book any luau when you've already arrived on island. Good luck! This is one activity you need to think seriously about before you come. We've provided a listing of each luau in Maui along with some Maui luau reviews by our previous clients a great article about luau food and another regarding the Hawaiian Luau Party.

Have you ever thought about why Maui luaus are so popular? Did you even realize that Maui luaus are popular? Well they are and ridiculously so. Of all the activities we have sold over the years, the number of luau tickets only falls second to snorkeling excursions, and that includes snorkeling from every major harbor and beach location on every part of the island.
But what's the big appeal and why are so many Maui luaus sold out weeks, and yes even months in advance? Here are a couple of simple answers:
  • Luau's for the most part only happen in Hawaii. They are a Hawaiian Island phenomenon.
  • Maui's beautiful oceanfront locations along the western (sunset) sides of the islands provide simply the very best environment to enjoy a relaxing and entertaining cultural experience like a luau.
  • There are a large variety of Maui luaus and one can easily be found within a general proximity of where you are staying.
  • And here's the big one. These luaus are genuinely 'Fun'. It is a guarantee you will be going out to eat that night anyway, so why not take in this unique form of Maui recreation and include great entertainment with your great food and really have a Hawaiian experience.

Looking for a Luau in Maui? Which Maui Luau to Choose?

This is everyone's big question. Here is a listing of the luau in Maui options. All of them come with reviews of each Maui Luau from our previous guests over the years.

Lahaina Luaus

The Old Lahaina Luau Certainly this is the most famous Maui luau and this is the one luau in Maui you will absolutely need to make reservations for very early. It is regularly booked up a month or two in advance. The show will focus on the culture of Hawaii without including other cultures from the South Pacific. The chants, the dancing, the music and the wardrobe are all very traditional in nature and this is the most authentic of your luau choices. Seating is assigned based upon the time that you book with the earlier bookings seated closer to the stage. You also have an opportunity to sit right up front on the ground on mats if you would prefer if those seats are still available at the time of your booking. Link to Old Lahaina

Client Lori

I was told by my travel agent who specializes in Hawaii that this was the best Luau bar none so we decided to celebrate our anniversary at Old Lahaina and it didn't disappoint. The grounds are beautiful and the entertainment was superb! And OMG the FOOD...definitely go hungry! The personal attention made us feel so special. The orchid lei that they placed on each of us was icing on the cake! I think I tried everything, even the poi (not a fan) because when in Maui...celebrate life! Oh and the entertainment was phenomenal!!

Feast at Lele The Feast offers one of the smallest and most intimate venues for a Maui luau show. This luau is very different. No matter the size of your group, you will be seated at your own private table. The food is unique also in that it is brought to you in courses based upon the particular culture that is performing on stage. They provide dancing and chanting from all the major South Pacific cultures and you will find it very interesting to taste all the options. Table service is a specialty here and you will have your own servers who will bring you your food and cocktails. Cocktails are upscale as well and blended drinks like 'lava flows' or 'pina colada' are yours for the asking. The entertainment, including fire dancing is all available during the sunset and evening hours with beautiful views of the ocean.

Client Diane

We Absolutely loved this Maui luau! The food was outstanding and the show was awesome. We have been to many luaus and this one was the best. I liked the idea of a sit down dinner much better. We had six in our party and we all loved it.

Kaanapali Maui Luau options

Hyatt Regency Luau  Located at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kaanapali this luau is held in its own specially designed area which is perfect for such a show. You can choose to have preferred seating which assures a close table to the stage or your can have regular seating which will provide 'first come, first seated' table options. There is a buffet line offering loads of both traditional Hawaiian foods and more normal American fare. All of the South Sea cultures are represented and you are encouraged to go back to the bar for additional drinks if you so desire.

Client Rose

I truly enjoyed the Drums of the Pacific. The host and the cast were super. The food was delicious and the service outstanding. I would recommend to family and friends.

Royal Lahaina Luau Here you will have a full Polynesian review of all the South Pacific island cultures along with all the traditional Hawaiian foods in a giant all you can eat buffet. A standard open bar is included with premium options available for purchase as well. You can also choose between regular seating and premium, which will guarantee seating right up front. The Royal Lahaina has always offered the fire dancing and that part of the show in itself is a major highlight of their presentation but the entire show is fabulous.

Client Patricia

Great luau! The entertainment was amazing and the food was wonderful! All you can drink complimentary cocktails were very good. Well worth the price for this luau. I would definitely recommend making this luau a part of everyone's Maui vacation.

Sheraton Maui Luau The location for this luau is fabulous. The Sheraton, along with the Kaanapali Beach Resort next door were the very first hotels to be built on Kaanapali Beach and the Sheraton ended up in the 'cat bird seat' constructing its low impact architecture right on the famous Black Rock promontory lava flow. Each evening the torch lighting ceremony happens at sunset where cliff divers light the torches way out on the cliffs, blow the conch shell and then dive into the water. The views from the luau grounds are completely unobstructed as you observe the colorful sunsets and amazing ocean coastline. Included is an all you can eat Hawaiian buffet with drinks and a full Polynesian show. Fire dancing is also included.

Client Phil

We had five couples attend this Maui luau and of those 3 people had never been to a luau, the rest had been to one or more. The comments of everyone was this event was fantastic, nice setting, very friendly, excellent meal and an entertaining diverse show. Other luaus attended in past years were good, this one was great, we recommend to anyone.

Westin Wailele Luau The Westin is of course a premium hotel and this is reflected in the luau they provide. This is a smaller and a bit more intimate luau than can be found in Kaanapali Beach and it is designed so you can view the entertainment with the sunset colors providing a backdrop for the stage. Premium seats can be purchased as well as regular but everyone will be able to enjoy the entertainment of the Polynesian review of island cultures. One of the strong elements of this luau in Maui is the multiple fire dances heading up the finale. All the traditional Hawaiian fare will be provided and you will have many cocktail options.

Client Linda

There were 11 of from ages 15 months to 70-something! Some first timers to a luau and some not. EVERYONE had a great time, enjoyed the show immensely and the food was delicious!!

Wailea Luaus

Grand Luau at Hanua'ula When the Grand Wailea Hotel opened some years back it was lauded to be one of the most beautiful hotels on Maui. It became that and much more. The special luau grounds that have been created on the property make for a very special experience. They provide a fantastic Hawaiian buffet and cocktails as well. This is a luau fit for the entire family as prior to the luau itself there are special Hawaiian games to play and the making of crafts such as leis and the applying of tattoos. You may even get to practice hula dancing. The traditional and exotic dances and cultures from the South Pacific will be on display during the entertainment portion and you will be treated to the fire dancer who has won the world competition in this form of Hawaiian dance for three years in a row.

Client Dennis

Everything was excellent. The atmosphere, the food, the drinks, the show, and the people hosting the event. This was a wonderful experience from start to finish.

Te Au Moana - Wailea Marriott. Located right on the lapping shores of Wailea with beautiful views of Lanai and Kahoolawe are yours to enjoy when you attend this performance. The backdrop of the sunset, ocean and islands will try to distract you from the beauty of the performances found here but you will find that they dovetail together perfectly. This truly Hawaiian experience will include all of the traditional Hawaiian fare at the buffet line and of course drinks will be provided as well. The famous Hawaiian production company 'Tahati Productions' will draw upon their, over 40 years of experience to provide the best entertainment available. You can choose between regular and premium seating.

Client Clarence

This was our third Luau experience. Our first time at Te au Moana - Wailea Marriott. THIS IS THE BEST LUAU we have ever had the pleasure of attending. Our family (party of 6) had the best time EVER ! The food was exceptional (especially the pork - so tender), the weather was phenomenal, our seating was perfect (we were concerned at first that because we were so close to the front that the loud speakers would overwhelm us, but it was not to be). The stage show flowed with a presentation of the history of this beautiful island, to exceptional dancing, music and singing. The highlight of the night was the fire dancer, he captivated the attention of everyone. All in all, what an awesome show and a nice experience. Kudos to the professionalism of all. If anyone is going to spend the money on a Luau - this is the place!

  • Tom's Tips - Maui Lu'aus

Their is no question that the single most popular and most respected lu'au presentation in all of Hawaii is the Old Lahaina Lu'au. They for years have set the 'gold standard' for a quality lu'au and this has been proven out by virtue of the fact that during most times of the year you simply cannot get in for more than a month in advance (and they operate every day). This lu'au concentrates specifically on the culture of old Hawaii and you will find much of the chanting and hula dancing and music to all be based in the traditional Hawaiian culture. If you do book early enough to get in you will have the option, if it is still available, to be able to sit right up next to the stage on the ground in traditional seating (although this is a fantastic way to experience the lu'au I do recommend this to younger rather than older participants because it can be a very long time for many people to sit on the ground with their legs folded or tucked underneath them). Whatever your seating preference you obviously want to make your booking with us early and one advantage in doing so is that the earlier we get your reservation in for a specific date, the closer to the stage you will be seated, although it must be said that all of the seats at this lu'au will provide you with an amazing experience... read more.

Video Transcript

This video segment is about Lu'aus on Maui.

If you're coming to Maui and planning to do a lu'au, that's a good move! Some of the very best lu'aus that you will find in the State are going to be located on Maui.

We have a lot of lu'aus. Lu'aus on the West Side, and the South Side as well. Most of them are going to be found in hotels or at a hotel area. Usually overlooking the Sunset. Some areas that we do lu'aus are in special lu'au grounds that are designed to just be for the lu'au.

What is a lu'au? Lu'au is just a big Hawaiian feast. We've got tons of food to start off with, Hawaiian food, traditional lomilomi salmon, chicken long rice, kalua pork. The kalua pork is the pig that they cook in an imu. Imu is a pit that is dug and then Kiawe wood is put inside and the wood is burned. Kiawe also was known as Mesquite in the Mainland. It burns really hot and just get it going, and throw some river rocks inside on top of the burning wood. They get really hot, then you end up putting the pork or other things that you can put inside them. You'll put that on top of the rocks, essentially you're going to cover with tarps and that sort of thing and then bury that in the sand on top and you create kind of a little pressure cooker. The hot rocks just keep on steaming, the big stocks that they put in the bottom of the banana plants, steam as well, keep the meat moist and it stays in there all day, maybe 6 or 7 hours and then it's unearthed. At lu'aus, it is just typically unearthed right when everybody is there, kind of a big occasion and everybody stands around watches as they take it out, they're explaining how they put it in. Then they'll ceremoniously take the pork that they've got and moved it over to the buffet line, and that's where you're going to come and eat the pork. It is delicious, especially with Poi, I must say.

This is the food that you're going to have which is fairly standard however, there are differences in terms of lu'aus on what they present. Drink, you're going to have lots of drink. Sometimes an open bar, sometimes it will be a specific number of cocktails that are allowed. That's always the big part of a lu'au is, and of course, there's entertainment and dancing. This is certainly Hawaiian and Hula, but also on many occasions, many lu'aus it is all the various islands when the Pacific region and their culture and their particular types of dancing and music.

These are the things that are standard in a sense with regard to lu'aus. But keep in mind that every lu'au is truly different. There's a different location that they're at, there are modified in different menus that they'll have, the drinks and the way they're served are different, and of course the people that are doing the lu'aus. They're all going to be different as well.

As a general rule, you could kind of look at these all as being fairly similar. With the exception of one lu'au, in particular, all of the lu'aus that we have on the island. They all provide kind of a medley of culture and dance of all the pacific islands. One of the lu'aus in particular specifically deals only with the culture of Old Hawaii, and this one I must say is one of that is very difficult to get in, especially during busy seasons. It's one that is booked up almost if not every single day of the year.

We'd like to ask you to make your bookings early. So that we can actually get you on, we've had situations where that particular lu'au and others, but that one, in particular, has been booked for 3 or 4 weeks out, maybe even more. Do you need to be full one day in order to be full, right? But they are full for 30 days in a row, it's kind of amazing the popularity of lu'aus here and how people really want to go to the good ones. We definitely recommend that you book early and also part of the good thing of making a booking early is that, we can set you a little bit closer to the stage. Although, I must say that the seats that you're going to find in these lu'aus are going to be good no matter where you're sitting.

The other thing it's pretty similar about most lu'aus is that their buffet. You go up and go through a line, and just have your choice of so much food, it's unbelievable! If you want and if you can do it, you'll have for more. These are a real feast of the major variety. One or two of the lu'aus that we have are designed for table service. But this is unusual, it doesn't happen very often, but it makes it nice. You can actually be served. In comparison just you get an idea, some of the lu'aus that we have for instance in Oahu can go up for a thousand people. It's really a big difference between islands and between the lu'aus.

Anyway, just remember if you get the takeaway on this. You should do a lu'au, it's a Dinner. You're going to do a dinner anyway, so this is the quintessential Hawaiian activity, the lu'au. You might as well do one, see what it's all about and enjoy it. They are a lot of fun but make sure you book early because sometimes we really have a hard time getting you on the days that you want.

The Hawaiian Lu'au, of all the various activities available in Hawaii, is certainly the most Hawaiian activity of all! The lu'au in Hawaii can truly only be found in Hawaii and this is the reason the Hawaii lu'au party has established itself in the hearts of the visitors who come to Hawaii as the quintessential Hawaiian event.
