Kauai Scuba Diving

Kauai Scuba Diving offers some of the most beautiful dive locations in the world.

Kauai has crystal clear water and Kauai diving provides some of the best locations to visit Hawaiian marine life.  Kauai scuba diving is actually a two-for one experience.  Not only do you have the beautiful underwater world of Kauai diving to explore but also the nearby island of Niihau diving as well.  Both Niihau and Kauai locations are world class and are graced with an abundance of marine life, large black coral trees, huge underwater caverns and spectacular vertical walls.

Kauai Diving is unique.

  • The entire underwater region surrounding Kauai, and in fact surrounding all the Hawaiian Islands, is very different from many other diving areas of the world for a number of reasons which have their root in several scientific disciplines.
  • First and foremost it must be noted that these islands we call Hawaii are the most remote archipelago of islands found anywhere in the world. There is roughly a buffer of 2000 to 2500 miles of seemingly endless ocean surrounding Hawaii in virtually every direction. The Hawaiian Islands have their point of origin in what is generally referred to as a permanent "hot spot" located deep below the earth's crust in the center of the huge Pacific Plate.
  • The most notable underwater consequence of this remoteness effecting the sea life surrounding Kauai and thus Kauai diving as well, is that these life forms are much less numerous in terms of species than can be found in other parts of the world.
  • However, the flip side of having less species is that there is a much higher incidence of endemic native species, or "Hawaii specific" life forms in the waters suitable for Kauai scuba diving.
  • Though it would seem that the overall connected nature of the oceans would allow for the free flow of fish and marine life to migrate from other locations to Kauai, in actual fact, a full thirty percent of the fish life found in Kauai waters are native to Hawaii. This may be at least partially a result of how long the various larva's of fish or coral can remain alive as they float for months in the ocean currents on their way to the Kauai coast.

All this being said the net result is that the diving in Kauai is not only different from other diving spots in the world but that it is unique as well.

Scuba diving in Kauai is an amazing experience. Of course, we have scuba diving all over the state on all the different islands.

The one dive that really sets Kauai apart from the rest of the islands is their dives that go to Niihau. This may be among, or if not, the very best dive that you will find in the state. It's very different than any of the other islands.

It is not a dive for everyone. First of all, it's a dive that happens generally in the summertime. It usually stops about October. The weather conditions, the waves, and so on, can make it very difficult to actually get to this location. You want a time of year that is calm. That's generally the summertime. What we're looking at here, if you can see, this is the island of Kauai. About 17, 18 miles off the coast is the tiny island of Niihau. At the very top, up here, you can hardly see it, there's a little island of Lehua, just off the edge there. It's a caldera. It's very similar to Molokini, if you're familiar with that. It is a fantastic place to dive.

These dives set themselves off apart in particularly one fashion. In the sense that these are, generally speaking, for certified divers. In fact, many of the dive boats that will take you out there will ask you to have dove with them before. Make sure that you know what you're doing. Certainly for experienced divers, these are full day dives. They're almost all three tank certified dives when you get there. Also, it should be mentioned, that even though the waters are going to be calmer that time of year when you would be going, it's still a long haul. 17, 18 miles along the ocean. You can get a lot of wave and chop. It could be difficult for some people. You have to want to go there. But when you get there, it's really an amazing experience. It's the reason you're going. It's just spectacular.

Within a short amount of time, oftentimes within 15 or 20 minutes of your first dive, you're seeing stuff that's a checkoff on a bucket list of most people to be able to see these things underwater. You've got sharks. You've got turtles and manta rays. The monk seals are one thing that you'll see there that you'll almost never see anywhere else. It's a thing that you will be seeing, almost all the time, every time that you go out. Beautiful schools of fish everywhere. Then of course, you've got Dolphins. You usually see a couple different kinds of dolphins. Sometimes in the channels on the way over, you might even see some sperm, Killer Whales, something like that. A lot of unusual fish that you won't see in other places.

Then, geologically speaking, this caldera of Lehua rock is a little bit like the surface of the moon, but underwater. Really a sweeping landscape. Very beautiful, fall offs and cliffs. You've got a lot of, particularly in the morning sun, you've got shimmering rays coming through and hitting various coral formations and rocks, and dividing themselves off in a prism effect that makes you feel like you're looking at a Cathedral, or something like that. Very, very beautiful. If you're a certified diver, and you're really interested in doing something special, this is something we would be delighted to hook you up with because you won't be disappointed.
