Inter-Island Airways, The Flight Along The Hamakua Coast - Tom Barefoot
The Hamakua Coast of the Big Island is one of nature's most visual treats and that entire coastline was visible to Jake and I as we traveled in comfort on one of Interisland Airways' Bombardier Shorts SD3-60-300 aircraft configured for 30 passengers. The best views were seen from the aircraft's right hand side as we made our way, first along the Hana coastline of Maui and then along the complete coastline of Hamakua. Just to view both these coastlines alone from the air via helicopter would cost well more than the price of the entire adventure on Interisland Air. The day we flew across was almost perfect and every dimension of the coastline was visible. We saw bays and inlets, surf breaks, enormous free-falling cliffs, waterfalls descending hundreds of feet to the ocean below, rainforests, small towns and villages and pasturelands. These special flight-seeing planes were designed for aerial viewing as they had the wing located above the passenger windows so all was visible below. The fact that the planes were prop driven was also a plus as they moved at a slow and methodical pace which allowed for the largest margin of viewing available.
