Sunrise from the Haleakala Volcano - Bike It Maui
![]() |
If it wasn't for the spectacular sunrise's at the crater of Haleakala no one would bother to get up so early to do the bike ride with Bike it Maui. In fact, the Bike It Maui staff would probably enjoy getting a few extra hours sleep each night and not having to make their pick-up's often at 2:00am or 2:30am in the morning. But alas, the sunrise at Haleakala is spectacular so the whole discussion about sleeping later is a mute issue. For me, personally, I'm glad I don't have to get up that early in the morning every day, but for a one-time event it is worth every minute of sleep that may have been lost.................That being said, if you are traveling to Maui from the mainland you can side-step the issue of lost sleep altogether by going with Bike It Maui on your first or second day on island while you are still getting up ridiculously early each morning as a result of the time change anyway.
In any event the sunrise at Haleakala crater is an event that has captured the attention of everyone that has made it up the mountain to witness it for decades. It always surprises me when I see just how many people show up for this spectacle each morning with hundreds of cold and shivering masses of people huddling along the guardrails near the visitors center at the crater rim, often three or four people deep, uu-ing and ahh-ing as mother nature paints her early morning canvas with all the colors of the rainbow.
