Biking down the Haleakala Volcano - Bike It Maui

Bike It Maui - The Bike Ride Down
Bike it Maui is one of the smallest bike companies that operate the famous Haleakala Downhill bike ride and often takes up no more than one van a day. On the day Jake and I went we were fortunate enough to have our two guides, Billy and Billy, to assist us though our journey (seemed a bit like Bob Newhart's television series: "this is my brother Darrell and my other brother Darrell". Picking us up in the dark of night we made our way to the crater to witness the sunrise and then descended to the 6500' level of the mountain just outside the parameters of Haleakala National Park and began our bike adventure to the ocean at that point. Both Billy's adjusted our handlebars and seats specific to each person, we jumped into our wind-breaker jackets and pants, put on our gloves, donned our helmets and began our journey. With that, we were drifting into another world. The mountain was a seemingly endless series of turns and straight-aways and we were always rolling, cruising, gliding, drifting our way down the hill. It is very unlike bike rides that you may be used to riding. This bike ride never runs out of that great force, gravity, which provides you with a motor that never runs out of gas until you reach the sea.
