Kauai Backcountry Adventures, Tubing The Ditch - Tom Barefoot's Tours |
The Hanamaulu ditch was created to provide water for the sugar plantation in Lihue around the late 1800's. This massive system is the first of its kind in Hawaii. It was completely hand dug and is entirely gravity fed. This engineering marvel takes the water from deep inside the jungle out on to the alluvial plane of South East Kauai. This massive sugar plantation was in operation for over 100 years until it was eventually shut down in the year 2000. A Local resident of Kauai and co-founder of America Online then bought the land after he was cashed out of his business when AOL merged with Time Warner. The large parcel of land no longer produces sugar. Instead, it has been used to film many movies and is home to a variety of activities. One of the most unique of which is the inner-tube ride through the ditch. It is more adventurous then you might imagine as much of the tour takes place underground in the massive tunnels that the ditch is routed through. (Headlamps are provided!)
