Maui Kayaks, Overview - Tom Barefoot's Tours
Upon check in we were greeted by Kaleo who was our guide for the day. We were issued our Kayaks and then we went over some basic instructions of how to steer and paddle the kayaks before Kaleo helped us launch them from the sandy beach. From here we went for a mellow paddle and looked for some whales for a while. The water and the views were amazing. The water was calm and glassy because there was not a breath of wind in the air. The views looking back onto the coastline were spectacular, the sun creeping over the ridgeline and slowly making its way down the hill side which added a dynamic effect to an already stunning view that I caught myself peeking back at every few paddle strokes until we got out to our snorkel spot. Kaleo was a very knowledgeable guide and he took us out to a snorkel spot that he knew of. The diving was great. We saw turtles, huge schools of fish, urchins, and even some sharks! When we were done with our snorkel we made our way back to towards the shoreline where we had an encounter with a mother Humpback whale and her baby calf. We stopped paddling and the whales approached us. At one point both of them got right in front of our boat in between us and another member of our group. This was an amazing experience, the baby whale was about as big as the kayak we were on and the mother was much larger. I don't think the day could've worked out better, we had an excellent time. -Jake Barefoot
