Hawaii Food Tours
by Matthew Gray the Chief Food Guy
Tasty Tours for the Hungry Traveler
In my many years of dealing with tours and activities in Hawaii, this is certainly one of the most unusual and interesting I have taken. If you have a sense of adventure and are passionate about wining and dining and all things "culinary" in general, Hawaii Food tours is a First-Class ticket! Not only do these tours take you to explore some of the most interesting ethnic food stores, restaurants, and factories on Oahu but it takes you to local areas of the island that you would likely never find on your own. Hawaii is a melting pot of cultures and all of them are in some way explored through these unique experiences. These small group tours are very personalized and you will feel like you are spending a day with old friends as the day progresses. I would highly recommend this for anyone having an interest in doing something very different and worthwhile. Mathew Gray is an accomplished Chef and experienced food critic and also, I might add, is a bit of a showman. His lively style and presentation keeps your attention focused and your interest peaking and his beautiful fiancée Kiera makes you feel so at ease and comfortable that its hard to say good bye to her at tours end. These tours are definitely very, very special and if you have the time and inclination to experience them, you won't be disappointed.

Hawaii Food Tours - If you’re looking for a totally different type of Hawaiian experience, Mathew Grays, Hawaiian Food Tours are the way to go. I guess it may have been fitting that the time I first experienced one of Mathew’s great tours was on leap year day in 2008. February 29th is a unique day and so was the tour itself. In all the years I’ve been providing tours and activities in Hawaii, and as you may have noticed there are thousands of them, I can honestly say that this fits the billing as “unique”. Mathew and his beautiful fiancé Kiera, picked me up at my hotel lobby at 9:25 in the morning and then proceeded to pick up the other eight members of our grateful entourage for what was truly going to become the most delightful of outings. We saw so much that day, learned so much about the culture and tasted so many foods that it was almost impossible to remember everything that we did. Some of the highlights however were visiting the Royal Kitchen for baked manapua, the Liliha Bakery (this place is a Honolulu legend and is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week) where we had Coco puffs and the Ying Leong Look Funn Noodle Factory where we were able to walk behind the scenes and witness the production first hand. We also walked around Chinatown to view all the fresh produce and were treated to two of the most unusual fruits I have ever tasted the exotic Longan and the Rambutan which are both relatives of the delicious Lychee. We also visited Ruby’s Restaruant and Bakery for some flakey egg custard tarts and then were treated to a small sampling of excellent Chinese BBQ meats at the Nam Fong store. The sit-down buffet portion of our trip was served at the Zaffron Indian Restaurant and the owner Farad spent much time with our group explaining the intricacies of his special and once again, exotic offerings. We ended our tour at Honolulu’s famous Leonard’s for the Portuguese favorite, malasadas. All in all it was a fantastic experience and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to experience something truly fun and unique.
