Dolphin Excursions -- Swimming with Dolphins off Oahu
Oahu is one of the very best places to view dolphins and also to swim with dolphins.
Not many people realize it but the Wai'anae Coast off leeward Oahu is one of the very best places in Hawaii to see the Hawaiian Spinner and Bottlenose Dolphins. These areas of fairly remote coastline seem to be the ideal habitat for the dolphins and the dolphins can be found here with absolute regularity.
The morning hours often find the dolphins resting in huge pods just off this coastline. Evenings and night-time for dolphins is a time when they go out to sea in deeper water to search for food but the morning time is a period of relaxation and convivial fun and playfulness.
Not only can the dolphins be found here but on most days you can actually get into the water and swim with them as well. In fact it is estimated that you will be able to see dolphins here about 95% of the time and of those times that you see them a full 80% of the time you will be able to swim with them as well. The fantasy of swimming with wild dolphins seems to be a common one and you can fulfill your fantasy here on the Oahu coastline.
The dolphins are our friends and enjoy swimming with us as well but we are taught on these dolphin tours that we must be very respectful of them in return. Every effort is made to not intrude on their surroundings and there are certain protocols you are asked to follow but the result will in all likelihood be that you will be in the open ocean playing with and enjoying the antiques of these wild Hawaiian dolphins. The dolphins are quite curious and if you simply enter into the water fairly near them, they will come over to you for a peek and in this way we engage them only when they themselves want to be engaged.
Almost everyone we send out to experience the dolphins on Oahu comes back with great stories to tell and fantastic photos of incredible spinner dolphins to share with family and friends. Many dolphin companies also provide hydrophones so you can listen in on the dolphins communicating with each other. Pick-up for these dolphin adventures are offered from Oahu's Waikiki hotels on some of the dolphin watches.
Swimming with dolphins is an event that is certain to make your day if not your entire vacation. Of all the Oahu activities, these dolphin watch, eco-adventures are the ones you should book first.
In addition to wild dolphin viewing we also have dolphin watching and swimming with dolphins in captivity such as can be found at Sea Life Park. In fact on the last couple of times that President Obama came to visit Oahu on vacation he took his children here for a dolphin swim experience. These dolphin swims are extremely popular and are often booked up well in advance so your best bet is to book them early so you can be assured of the day and time you would like to go. Pick-up can be arranged from your Waikiki Hotel for the round-trip transport to Sea Life Park.

Ko'Olina Marina is the big beautiful Harbor on Oahu's west side that is "ground zero" for dolphin watching on Oahu and one of the wonderful companies we have that goes out to view these feisty marine mammals is Ko'Olina Ocean Adventures. Ko'Olina Ocean Adventures, rather than use sail boats, uses the fast and stable rigid hull inflatables and swift and maneuverable power boats to catch-up with and view the dolphins. The dolphins on this coastline are generally either the Bottlenose Dolphin or, more likely, their cousins the Spinner Dolphins. The Spinner Dolphins are the more plentiful variety and also the most playful. Their antics are a joy to behold as they swim and jump and spin and race each other and race the boat's wake at the bow.

Sea Life Park is a great place to view the dolphins. Yes, there are places on Oahu that you can see the dolphins while swimming in the wild but you in all likelihood will not get as close or be able to touch them in those conditions. The dolphins at Sea Life Park have been nurtured and cared for in this facility for years and it is obvious that they enjoy the setting. So many of the sea creatures are so fun to watch at Sea Life Park but none are quite as much fun as these playful dolphins. The Dolphin Cove Show is a real crowd pleaser. The dolphins will flip, jump and spin (often in unison) in this comfortable open-air theater. You'll have a great time here but it will also be educational as well. The Dolphin Encounter is another way to interact with dolphins at the park. This is particularly great for small children who would feel more comfortable in the shallow end of the pool while dolphins come up to mingle with them and perhaps even offer a kiss. Children here will learn about the friendliness and intelligence of the dolphins and will have tons of fun interacting with them. The next step up in terms of interacting with the dolphins more would be the Dolphin Swim Adventure. Here's your opportunity to fulfill your desire to swim with a dolphin. You'll be in the water with the dolphins for thirty minutes petting them, posing with them and learning to participate with them in a series of close encounter activities. Finally you'll also be able to participate in the Dolphin Royal Swim. Here's where you're fantasy's really come to life. You'll truly be able to swim with a pair of dolphins as you grab a hold of each of their dorsal fins as they take you for a ride across the pool. Not to be outdone by that encounter you will next be able to ride like "rocket man" across the pool as you are catapulted in the air from beneath by dolphins pushing you up by your feet.

Dolphins in Oahu - Lets get very clear about this one point. Dolphins are located throughout the state of Hawaii and can be seen off all the islands. These fun-loving marine animals have a permanent home here in Hawaii and are in the islands all the time. There is no doubt however, that the single best place to view them on a consistent basis is off the Waianae Coastline in the area extending north of Ko'Olina to Kaena Point. This area of Oahu coastline seems to suit the dolphins to a tee as they are found here everyday. Often the best time to see them is in the morning as they are resting on the surface after a big night of foraging and hunting for food. Seemingly always up for a good time and a great adventure, these dolphins almost always rise to the occasion for a bit of play with human snorkelers and this makes for one of the best times you will have on your entire vacation.
