Haleakala is an ideal place to explore by horseback. Pony Express is a company that offers horseback rides into the deep Haleakala Crater. The elevation of this area is high enough to make a noticeable difference in the quality of the air. Hiking in this high elevation environment is much more difficult than it is at the lower elevations and to be able to experience this area from the back of a horse is the only alternative to the strenuous hike due to the parks ban on bicycles and motorized vehicles on the craters trails. Pony Express offers a variety of different packages that vary in length of time and the amount of distance that they travel. The Haleakala Crater is such a unique environment that many of the plants and animals that are found here are not found anywhere else in the world. The Silversword plant is found only in the craters of Maui and the Big Island is one of the more pronounced of these unique plants with its long stalks and flowers easily visible from hundreds of yards away.…

Description: This is one of the few horseback rides in the world that ventures into a dormant volcano! This trip goes all the way to the Crater floor where a delicious lunch is served. Round trip is 7.5 miles taking 3.5 to 4 hours in the saddle, allow 5 to 5.5 hours total time, to include lunch and picture taking. This is a full day adventure. Some experience necessary should be athletic and adventurous. There is a $ 10.00 fee per vehicle to enter the crater, not included in trip. Riders must be in good physical condition, ridden at least 6 to 8 times prior.*
Operates: Monday-Friday 1st Ride Check In is 8:30am / 2nd Junction Ride Check In at 9:15am
Departure Point: Stop by the RANCH, on your left (378 Crater Road, 2.5 miles up the highway) on your way up to the Crater at approximately 8:30am to check in and do paperwork, then proceed to the top (there is a $10.00 per vehicle fee to enter the Park) and meet trail guide at the Haleakala Visitor Center Parking Lot.

ALSO anyone with health concerns with heart, lungs or elevation sickness, affected by high altitudes (10,023 feet elevation) should not take this ride.
