One of the most popular destinations for snorkeling cruises departing from the island of Maui is the island of Lanai. This small low lying island that sits across the channel from Lahaina was once home to the largest pineapple plantation on the planet. The plantation closed in the early nineteen nineties and the industry was replaced by two different five star resorts that were built on the Island. The relative lack of development compared to the other islands in the Hawaiian chain has allowed Lanai to remain very pristine in many aspects. The reef that sits along the eastern shore of the island is the longest unbroken coral reef in the state of Hawaii. This area is home to dolphins that unlike whales do not migrate and are found here year round.
