Makena Stables

One of the older stables we have on the island of Maui that offers horseback rides is the Makena Stables. Pat and Helaine Borge established the stables in 1983. This small and personalized company takes intimate groups of six or less along the beautiful lower outreaches of the Ulupalakua Ranch. Their routes offer spectacular views of La Perouse Bay and the Ahihi Kinau Reserve and the surrounding islands. This is an adventurous ride and participants should be in generally good health. This side of the island is generally very sunny and rarely rains. Two and a Half Hour Morning Ride - Makena Stables

Description: A moderately challenging ride suitable for most levels of riders. Two hours of riding time with a half hour refreshment break of fresh fruit, a variety of snacks and bottled water. Riders are matched by size and ability to an appropriate horse. Lessons provided for individual riders as needed by the owner/trainer. This ride climbs up to Kalua O Lapa, the vent formed by the last eruption on Maui. This ride offers panoramic views of the southern slopes of Haleakala, lava fields, La Perouse Bay and the islands of Hawaii, Kahoolawe, Molokini, Lanai and Molokai.*
Operates: Monday-Saturday 8:30am to 11:30am
Departure Point: Located 4 miles past the Maui Prince Hotel on Old Makena Road in South Maui.
Duration: 2.5 hours
Equipment: Healthy, clean and well-mannered horses.
Capacity: 6 riders per ride
Inclusions: Snacks and soft drinks are provided

The panoramic sunsets can be just breathtaking. Climb up winding trails through the slopes of Ulupalakua Ranch exploring the hills overlooking La Perouse Bay. The expansive views of lava, ocean and wild lands will make you feel as though you're the only person on Maui. As promised here is my assessment of the Kapalua Kai sunset sail cruise. It was wonderful. Although we had a misty rainy afternoon at times, the intent of the cruise was met. They tacked back and forth until the sun went down and stopped when we saw whales and dolphins. Additionally, the crew of the Kapalua Kai was very responsive to needs of their passengers, plus made us all feel safe and well taken care of. In the times when there was no mist and rain, they were asking patrons if they needed their picture taken, they distributed drinks as ordered by the patrons, and they were all quite personable.

Good cruise - plus we had an unbelievable view from the ocean of a detailed rainbow shown against the background of the West Maui Mountains and the hotels along Kaanapali beach.

It was a sad day yesterday knowing that we would wake up to another environment, but,

Again, thank you for your professionalism in helping all of us with our activity needs. If you were not there, Steve, when we wanted to make a booking, all of the other sales people at Tom Barefoot's were just as cordial and courteous as you. And as in the past, now 7 years, we will continue to use you when we come out there. July 2004 looks like the next time we will be there. Hopefully, after one our vacations, we will just stay and not come back to the mainland. That would be nice.
