Makena Stables Horseback Riding

One of the oldest stables we have on the island is the Makena Stables, established in 1983 by Pat and Helaine Borge. This small and personalized company takes intimate groups of six or less along the beautiful outreaches of the Ulupalakua Ranch offering spectacular views of La Perouse Bay and the Ahihi Kinau Reserve. This is an adventurous ride and participants should be in generally good health.

2.5 HOUR MORNING RIDE - A moderately challenging ride suitable for most levels of riders. Two hours of riding time with a half hour refreshment break of fresh fruits, a variety of snacks and bottled water. Riders are matched by size and ability to an appropriate horse. Lessons provided for individual riders as needed by the owner/trainer. This ride climbs to Kalua 0 Lapa, the vent formed by the last eruption on Maui and offers panoramic views of the southern slopes of Haleakala, lava fields and La Perouse Bay. 8:00am to 11:30am

2.5 to 3 HOUR SUNSET RIDES - this is simply a lovely time of day to ride, with cooler tradewind breezes and golden late afternoon sunlight sparkling on the sea. Climb up winding trails through the slopes of Ulupalakua Ranch exploring the hills overlooking LaPerouse Bay. The expansive views of lava, ocean and wild land will make you feel as though you're the only person on Maui. Includes a refreshment break with fresh fruits, snacks and bottled water, up at the most spectacular viewpoint on Maui Kalua O Lapa.

PRIVATE TOURS - for the past 21 years Makena Stables has offered personalized riding tours to guests along with individual lessons on happy, healthy horses. While you don't really need a private ride to have a quality experience, for those who prefer the smaller group size morning or sunset rides are available for families, friends or couples for a very special adventure.
