Hiking companies
You can enjoy many of the trails on Maui by using one of the professional Maui hiking companies on island. Sometimes they will take you hiking on public trails and other times the hiking trails will be on private property with only private access. Maui hiking guides are a unique blend of naturalists, historians, botanists, and storytellers all wrapped up in one person.
Tom's Tips - Maui Hiking Tours
- Guided hikes can vary from brief to strenuous. There will be one just right for you.
- If you plan to do some hiking, bring some comfortable and preferably, "broken in" hiking shoes with you.
- If you plan to do some hiking on your own, please thoroughly research the hike before you go. There are many beautiful areas that can turn treacherous on the turn of a dime. Always hike with a cell-phone and let someone know exactly where you are going and when you expect to return.
Hike Maui Certainly the oldest, most well known and most highly respected hiking company on the island is Hike Maui. Hike Maui was the brainchild of naturalist and "hiker extraordinaire" Ken Schmitt. Ken's story dates back to the late 1970's when he arrived on Maui to check out of the world of academia where he studied classical Greek and Latin as an undergraduate and then majored in Oriental philosophies for his graduate degree. He decided to come to Maui...and totally check out. One day he walked into the jungle and lived there for three years. During those years he learned the lessons that "Mother Maui" taught and only returned to civilization when he felt he was called to share this knowledge with others. For the first 10 years or so, he only gave hikes himself, but they had so much emotional impact on others that he quickly became known as the "hiking guru" of Maui. Dozens of articles were written about him in publications ranging from Travel and Leisure, Conde Naste, The Saturday Evening Post and Town and Country. Soon he had just too much business to handle and so now he has attempted to essentially "clone himself" by making all on his guides train by coming along with him for a matter of months. With an extensive professional staff that is among the best the industry has to offer, Hike Maui is a hiking company worth looking into if your thinking about exploring the forest this time you're on Maui.

Hiking Tours and Trails in Maui - Maui is unquestionably a Hikers wonderland. There are hikes for virtually everyone. If you just want to get out in nature, perhaps walk a half a mile or so, enjoy the beautiful scenery and breath some fresh air. Maui has hikes for you! If you’re an experienced hiker and want to put your body to the test no problem. Maui will kick your butt. There are hikes you can do on your own, using a guide book like “Hiking Maui” which can be found in most bookstores, or you can take a guided hike where experienced and professional guides can take you to some of the most exciting locations on Maui. The choice is yours but you should probably consider doing some form of hiking when on island because many of Maui’s most beautiful spots are located off the beaten path. Some of the spots you should consider hiking to, through or in are the Crater of Haleakala on its Switchbacks or Sliding Sands trails which lead to the crater floor. You can also hike the trail leading from the Crater floor all the way to sea level down the Kaupo Gap. Hosmers Grove is also an hour long hike which is located within the Haleakala Park boundaries. One of my favorite hikes is a hike through the redwood forest of Polipoli with three different options of trail lengths. Hana has some great hiking with some of the most popular trails being in the Oheo Gulch up to the bamboo forest. Iao Valley is also a great choice.
