The Story of Dan the Diver:

Dan the Diver is one of our ohana (family) here at Barefoot Tours.

When he first arrived on Maui from, California, his priority was to become a certified Scuba diver. Within a week he earned his Scuba diving certification and now spends weekends and spare time diving, diving, and diving some more.

Why this obsession? Dan became entranced by Maui's underwater charm, its coral reefs, magnificent marine life, striking underwater caves and cliffs, its wrecks, its remarkable visibility, its warm water, and its knowledgeable and friendly diving community. In short, Maui is a diver's paradise.

There are many wonderful scuba diving spots on Maui. Probably the most well-known is Molokini. We send many people to snorkel in the central crater but scuba divers have a much wider range. They can dive the crater, the outer reef, or Molokini's backside "wall" which appears to descend straight down and disappear into the abyss. Many scuba enthusiasts think this is the most exciting dive of all.

Lanai is another popular dive destination. Just one of many spots around this island is "Cathedrals," so named because from underwater, looking up through its labyrinth of coral formations and caves, the sun's rays and shafts of light shimmering down create the illusion of being in a cathedral.

Divers on holiday can often dive day after day and never visit the same location twice. Even Dan, who has been scuba diving off Maui for what seems to be every minute for a year now, has not seen all that Maui has to offer.

Scuba Diving in Maui - Options:

Not a certified Maui scuba diver but would like to experience a Maui scuba Dive. We'll set you up on a "first- time Maui dive." No scuba diving experience is necessary, you'll dive with a full tank of air on your very first day. Some Maui scuba dive shops and companies even offer a two-tank dive for beginners. You get used to the tanks and other scuba diving apparatus during your first scuba dive and, once comfortable in the water, your second scuba dive provides the diving experience you are seeking.

Certified already? Don't forget your C-card. Book your Maui scuba diving adventure early during busy times. We have a wonderful book at our shops titled "Molokini Island - Hawaii's Premier Marine Preserve." It is the definitive work on the subject. There are no guarantees you will go to a particular dive spot. If the dive company knows you want to go to one place specifically, every effort will be made to accommodate you. Prices for dives usually include all equipment. The deciding factors are weather and ocean conditions.

Here are some of the great companies we have that offer diving on Maui:

Ed Robinson - has been a respected leader in the Maui dive community for more than twenty years. Ed is a well known underwater photographer, with his images appearing in many popular diving publications. Ed Robinson Diving Adventures caters to certified divers only (who must have been diving within the last two years). Daily dive sites (over twenty) are not pre-packaged to allow for flexibility due to weather and diver needs. SEA SPIRIT is a 32' aluminum, custom dive boat SEADIVER II is a 30' aluminum, custom dive boat Fast and comfortable these dive boats were custom designed by Ed Robinson and feature Shade, bathroom, fresh water, drystorage, large dive deck, easy water entry and exit, gear storage beneath each bench. Each boat can accommodate up to 12 divers (2 or 3 dive teams).

Extended Horizons - not only dives some of Maui's best scuba locations, but specializes in sites on the island of Lanai. "EXTENDED HORIZONS II" is a 36' Custom Aluminum Dive Boat that can accommodate up to 13 divers.

Hawaiian Rafting Adventures - DIVE MAUI offers high end rental gear (weight integrated BC's, women's BC's, Titan Regulators and Suunto Computers, Split Fins, Wetsuits), included in the price. 12 divers maximum on "PELE'S RAIV" a 28 foot RAIV and a 6 passenger "SEAHAWK" single hull dive boat. Hawaiian Rafting has been running dive tours out of Mala Wharf in Lahaina for many years. They operate from a raft which makes the dive more of an adventure then some of the larger boats. Going scuba diving with Hawaiian Rafting is like going on an adventure with Jacque Cousteau.

Island Scuba - is a dive company that operates out of the Marriott and Kaanapali Beach Hotels in Kaanapali Maui. Island Scuba concentrates heavily on certification programs, introductory beach dives and night dives. Much of the initial instruction done by Island Scuba is performed at the hotel pool and many of the ocean dives are done right in the Kaanapali Beach area. 6 Divers per guide and boat dives are available.

Lahaina Divers - is perhaps the oldest and most established of the dive shops that run out of Lahaina. Lahaina Divers is a full service dive shop that has been in operation for over 25 years. Lahaina Divers provides scuba diving tours to Lanai, Molokini, the West Maui Coastline and a slew of additional services including introductory dives, certification courses, Japanese language dives, handicapped scuba diving and scuba gear rentals. There are no more than 4 Introductory Divers per instructor. ENDEAVOR is a 50' Custom Twin Engine Dive Vessel 24 Divers - 30 max with snorkelers RELIANT is a 43' Custom Dive Boat 18 Divers - 22 max with snorkelers.

Makena Coast Dive Charters - is a small but exciting Maui dive company that operates scuba diving tours to Molokini and the Makena Coast. The owners of Makena Coast Charters, Steve and Eve Hogan, are a colorful couple and very people oriented. Steve, the company founder, is also a captain, dive instructor and award winning cinematographer. Eve is an author with two stories in the Chicken Soup for the Ocean Lovers Soul. Aside from their dive tours, Makena Coast Divers also offers underwater videography and weddings at sea. The "Makena Mele" is a spacious 35 foot Force Marine Boat that can accommodate 12 divers (led in small groups of seven) and up to 20 snorkelers. There is also an enclosed cabin for getting out of the wind and sun. Makena Coast Charters continues to provide a first-class experience for certified divers, introductory divers and snorkelers. Maui Diamond II - specializes in scuba dives along the southern coast of Maui Hawaii including Molokini, Turtle Town/5 Caves and St. Anthonys Wreck. Dive tours aboard the Maui Diamond are available in both the mornings and afternoons (weather permitting). An extremely unusual feature about this Maui dive company is that they permit, and even encourage, snorkelers to come snorkel with their diving counterparts. Another nice option is that Maui Diamond 2 offers personalized and professional photo and/or videos of your dive. SCUBA DIVING Certified divers are led by certified instructors with no more than six divers in a group. The first dive ususally at Molokini is approx. 70'-80' for 30 minutes and the second dive along Maui's coast at Turtle Town or the Pali at 40' for 40 minutes. All dive and snorkel equipment is provided, including optical masks and flotation devices. MAUI DIAMOND II is a 38' Wilson Power Driven Vessel with Twin Engines she is Coast Guard Certified for 24 passengers, but limited to 18 for comfort. MAALAEA HARBOR Slip 23.

Mike Severns Scuba Diving - perhaps the most heavily steeped in academia of all the Maui dive companies, Mike Severns Scuba Diving is owned and operated by Pauline Fiene, who has a degree in biology from St. Olaf College. She is the co-author of several diving books including Molokini - Hawaiis Island Marine Sanctuary, and has studied Hawaiian marine life for fifteen years and has personally discovered several new species of marine life. The Mike Severns Scuba Diving approach is to view each dive as a fun, relaxing, intellectually and spiritually fulfilling dive experience. Dive sites are chosen in the morning depending on the interest of the divers and ocean conditions. PILIKAI is a spacious 38 ft. Munson Dive Boat which takes two groups of six divers Meet at the KIHEI BOAT RAMP.

Prodive Maui - is a small family operated scuba dive company that runs tours daily to Molokini and other dive sites around South Maui. Prodive Maui caters only to experienced divers so there is rarely a time when scuba divers will be held up by others who need more attention. They take very small groups and specific Maui dive locations are generally decided upon by consensus of the diving clients on board. "PRODIVER" is a 34' Custom built scuba boat that features covered or open area seating, fresh water shower, large swimstep with two ladders and a private restroom. Coast Guard certified for 16 passengers they only take 6 divers per trip. Departs from the KIHEI BOAT RAMP.

Scuba Shack - is a full service dive shop located in South Maui that also runs a full complement of diving options and dive tours. Scuba Shacks state of the art, custom built Maui dive boat with twin turbo diesel engines and Jet (no props) drives speeds divers to Molokini, Makena and points south on its morning adventures. Introductory dives are also available and Scuba Shack is one of the very few companies that offers a two-tank intro boat dive and snorkelers are welcome to come along for the fun. "WHAT'S THE SCOOP" is a 38' Aluminum, Custom Dive Boat large dive platform, oversized boarding ladders and warm water showers. It can accommodate 12 divers max. 6 Snorkelers (Divers are kept in groups of 6 or less) Departs from the KIHEI BOAT RAMP.

Turtle Reef Divers - Turtle Reef Divers specializes in Maui scuba diving tours made from the shoreline, and in scuba certification programs. Much of Hawaii's sea life can best be seen in the shallow waters along the coast and Turtle Reef Divers visits many of these special off-shore locations. The dive company deals frequently with 1st time scuba divers. They find that the best approach is to conduct the initial training in shallow ocean waters, hence eliminating the pool training sequence offered by many other Maui dive companies.

Maui Scuba Diving - Maui has so much when it comes to diving. Maui has certified dives and beginner dives. Dives to Molokini’s famous back wall or to the inner reef. Dozens of dives to Lanai including the spectacular Cathedrals and so many dive location just off the coast of Maui they are too numerous to mention. There are also certification courses, beach dives, night dives, scooter dives, special 3-tank dives and Snuba diving. There are 4-tank all day multi-island dives. We have wreck dives and turtle reef dives. There are dives specifically for advanced divers only. There are special Manta Ray dives and dives from all sorts of vessels from the most modern and sophisticated of dive boats to fast and speedy rigid-hulled inflatables made popular by Jaques Cousteau. The water is clear, its blue and its irresistible. Maui is just simply a great place to dive.
