America II
The America II is a 12-meter sailing ship that was designed and built solely for the 1987 Americas Cup race. She offers sailing trips year round and whale watches during the winter. During whale season whale sightings are guaranteed. The channel between Maui, Molokai, Lanai, and Kahoolawe is much calmer then the open ocean and makes for an ideal spot to go for a relaxing whale watch sail. This channel is a global phenomenon of sorts. It is an epicenter for migration of the Northern Pacific humpback whales. The humpbacks migrate here to give birth to their calves and to mate. Then they journey all the way back across the ocean towards Alaska where they feed on krill and small fish. At one point the humpback whales were on the brink of extinction. In the last thirty years a great conservation effort has been made and the results of it are becoming clear. The last few whale seasons have been spectacular with literally thousands of whales coming to Maui.
