Alex Air Helicopters
Steve Alexander, founder of Alex Air Helicopters, has a history in the business that dates back to the days in Long Beach when his father was a Hughes Helicopter pilot after World War II. Steve himself later worked for the Hughes Tool Company and became an expert on helicopter electrical systems. The father and son team later opened a new company of their own called Alex Air in Torrance California. In 1984, Steve and his wife Shelly, moved to Maui and brought their company with them. Alex Air is the oldest helicopter operation on the island.

Alex Air Helicopters - Perhaps no other helicopter company in Hawaii is steeped in the history of helicopters, helicopter design and production as is Alex Air. Steve and Shelly Alexander are the owners of Alex Air which is the oldest existing helicopter company on Maui dating back to 1984, but the origins of the company go back much further than that. Steve’s father Eli worked for over 30 years for the Hughes Tool Company aircraft division and was often a companion of Howard Hughes. He assisted in the development of the “Flying Boat” or “Spruce Goose” as it became to be known, the Hughes 300 and later became the project engineer for the development of the famous Hughes 500 aircraft. Intermittently he also worked for NASA on the Apollo Moon shot project. Meanwhile Steve, also began working for Hughes and became known as the wiz-kid of helicopter electrical systems. In 1971 the father and son team started up their own aviation business called Alex Air, in Torrence California. By the mid 80’s Steve and Shelly were ready to make the shift to the island of Maui and begin giving island tours. The rest is history. Decades later they are still here sharing their experience and love of the islands with our island visitors.
