So what is a zipline tour anyway? Zipline tours are a fairly recent activity to appear on Kauai, but Kauai zip-line tours are certainly one of the most popular activities on the island and are often booked weeks in advance.

Simply, Zipline is an aerial runway consisting of a pulley suspended on a cable that is mounted on an incline. Ziplines are designed to allow a seated and harnessed passenger to traverse valleys, gorges or drop-offs along an inclined cable by being attached to a freely moving pulley while using gravity as a motor. Professional zipline courses such as those found on Kauai are often operated at high speeds and can cover long distances at considerable heights with multiple zipline crossings included in the course.

Tubing on Kauai is a different story. In the 1800's a series of “gravity flow” water carrying “flume” systems were created to carry water from the areas of Kauai that had extreme rains to the more arid areas used to grow sugar cane. These flume systems were a technological marvel at the time and are still used to transport water to this day. Often these flumes were burrowed through tunnels and over bridges in their gentle descent to the lower areas and traveled through some of the most beautiful and remote areas on the island with incredible views of the ocean, coastlines, mountains, forests and valleys.

Today, these flumes are traversed via inner-tubes, or “tubes”, in one of the most unusual, exciting and beautiful tours you will ever encounter. Come join the fun, but be sure to book early as these tubing tours also can be booked weeks in advance.

The setting is magnificent: a 1/4 mile foot trail through the jungle leads to a steep valley at the confluence of two streams with a 150 foot waterfall tumbling over fern covered black basalt boulders on one side and a lazy 80 foot wide tropical stream on the other.
