Kauai's Na Pali Coast Tours and Activities
Kauai's Na Pali Coast Tours are among the most spectacular, picturesque and unique tours and activities to be found anywhere in Hawaii.
Though we tend to think of the tours offered on the Na Pali Coast of Kauai as being primarily snorkeling boats and snorkeling rafts that visit the area, in all actuality, helicopter flights that tour Na Pali, kayak tours that cruise the coastline, fishing trips that search for big game along the Na Pali Coast and hiking tours that walk the sheer cliffs of the Na Pali Coastline should of course all be considered on the list of Kauai's Na Pali Coast tours.

The list of Na Pali Coast tours at that point would be way too large in scope for our purposes here so please be aware that although we will only be discussing the snorkel and sailing tours that are available on Kauai's Na Pali Coastline there are many others as well that will see this remarkable coastline in different ways and can be found on our site in their respective categories.
Aside from appreciating the sheer beauty of Kauai's Na Pali Coastline when you see it an understanding of a small amount of the Na Pali's past, topography and geology are important in getting a full appreciation and richer understanding of this magical and amazing place.
- The Napali Coast is isolated from the rest of Kauai by its tremendous and almost impassible cliffs which descend thousands of feet from the mountains above directly into the ocean. This coastline is believed to have been the original home of the first Hawaiians arriving on Kauai. Although the environment with its steep cliffs and often harsh ocean conditions may seem inhospitable, it actually provided very nourishing living conditions. There was plenty of fresh water, the valleys were lush with abundant fruit and plant life which also allowed for a certain degree of cultivation and the ocean waters provided ample quantities of fresh fish and marine life. Small villages were established and thousands of Hawaiians were known to have lived back up in these beautiful valleys.
- The extremely beautiful and isolated Na Pali Coast of Kauai was thought to have been inhabited by thousands of Hawaiians in the “pre-contact” days prior to the discovery of Hawaii by Captain Cook. The valleys along the shoreline were well protected with the only access being via water or strenuous foot trails. These valleys were also very fertile with abundant rivers and flowing waterfalls and had a plentiful supply of fish off the coast. Taro became a stable crop for these inhabitants along with sweet potatoes and breadfruit.
- The Na Pali Coast was actually a central location in those days inviting commerce between the regions of Hanalei, Waimea and the small island of Niihau as well as the much smaller islands of the Hawaiian archipelago located to the north of Kauai.
- Extensive stone walled flat terracing can still be found on the valley floors where Hawaiians once lived and harvested their taro and these rock walls and terraces can be seen on some of the Na Pali Coast tours we offer.
- The Na Pali Coast cliffs consist of a robust tapestry of deep and narrow valleys ending abruptly at the sea. Geologically speaking, this type of valley is referred to as a "hanging valley". Instead of the valley continuing onward along the sea floor out to sea it ends abruptly at the sea shore where the constant and vigorous wave action carves the valley floor away at cliffs edge. Waterfalls and raging streams continue to this day to cut these narrow valleys.
There are a vast array of boats that ply the waters off the Na Pali coast to witness natures spectacle from the perspective of the ocean, to snorkel the beautiful waters and to experience the numerous dolphins and whales (in season) along the way. Our "fleet" varies from large and stable power driven vessels to sail boats to zodiac rafts. The majority of boats will depart from Port Allen or Waimea areas. Trips also vary with the time of year.
Here is a selection of some of the types of tour boats you may expect to see on one of our tours to Kauai's Na Pali Coast:
- Large and comfortable sailing catamarans are some of the more popular boats used to explore Kauai's Na Pali Coastline
- Large power catamarans not only visit Na Pali Coastline but some also visit the neighboring island of Niihau also known as the "forbidden island".
- Zodiac type rafts or what are known as Rigid-Hulled Inflatable's have always been a very popular way to explore the caves, cliffs and rugged coastlines of Kauai's Na Pali Coast in a fashion that could be described as "up close and personal".
- Small and personalized 6 passenger boats that will take private and exclusive tours to Na Pali for just you or your small group of family or friends.
Tom's Tips - Kauai's Na Pali Coast Tours
- Taking a boat tour to see and snorkel Kauai's spectacular Na Pali Coast is one of the "must do" activities on Kauai. You won't see anything like this anywhere else in the world.
- The most personalized and most adventurous of any of the tours we offer to see Na Pali are the rafts. They often get right inside the caves along the coast and that in itself is worth the price of admission.
- Summer is the most opportune time to visit the Na Pali Coast as the sea conditions are usually much milder. The winter time brings in the northern swells and often makes the waters along the Na Pali coastline very treacherous and impossible to negotiate, however some winter days can be excellent as well.
One of the premier trips offered by Blue Dolphin Charters is the tour and snorkel to the Na Pali Coast. The Na Pali Coastline is one of the true treasures of Kauai and is thought by many to be one of the most beautiful coastlines to be found anywhere in the world. This may be one of the "signature" tours offered by Blue Dolphin Charters and you will delight to the combination of snorkeling, sightseeing, dolphin watching and whale watching in season. Generally speaking however the best time to take one of Blue Dolphin's exciting tours to the Na Pali Coast is in the summer when the ocean conditions there are the calmest. If you've not seen the Na Pali coast from the ocean before you are in for a real treat. Not only does it have cliffs that careen down thousands of feet to the ocean below but waterfalls are an almost constant feature and the sea caves and caverns are a site to behold. Some of my fondest memories of tours taken on the island of Kauai have been of the Na Pali Coast and one of the "fondest of fond" memories I have was when viewing this coastline with an old high school friend aboard the Blue Dolphin Charters.

To suggest that the Na Pali Coastline is unique is almost bordering on understatement. It is quite simply, spectacular! To match the splendor of the coastline Captain Andy has created a number of half-million dollar yachts that are designed just for the experience of touring Na Pali. Captain Andy's boats are fully-rigged allowing for sailing speeds up to 20 knots. During the Summer months (May 5th through September 15th) the Catamaran Kahanu offers a fabulous tour to the Na Pali Coast. The Na Pali Coastline is considered by many to be among the most beautiful coastlines in the world and the snorkeling here is fabulous as well. The Catamaran Kahanu is somewhat smaller than many of the boats that traverse this coastline and because of its smaller size is allowed to swim and snorkel at the ancient site of an extinct fishing village on the Na Pali Coastline called Nu'alolo Kai. The smaller size of the vessel also translates into more personalized attention from the captain and crew who are primarily local Hawaiian in ancestry. The local family who own and run these charters have been residents of Kauai's North Shore all their lives and have a personal historical link to the various sites you'll be seeing along the Na Pali shore.

The Na Pali Coastline is the crowning jewel of the of all that is beautiful on Kauai and Holo Holo Charter's gorgeous sailing catamaran "Leila" is a great choice of a boat to take you there. This tour is usually about five hours in duration and includes all snorkel gear and instruction. Also included is a continental breakfast and a deli lunch along with beer and wine. Holo Holo's "Leila" is designed for smaller groups than many as it is Coast Guard approved for forty-five passengers but is filled to only thirty-seven so that everyone can have plenty of room. Whales can be seen on these trips during the Winter months and dolphin watching occurs all throughout the year. The Na Pali Coast is a must for anyone's trip to Kauai and Holo Holo's "Leila" is a great boat to choose to take you there. Holo Holo is one of the few companies that can also include a trip to Niihau with a visit to Na Pali so you might want to check that tour on our site as well.

Kauai Sea Tours provides a unique adventure to see the Na Pali Coast, one that will not be available with any other company. Not only does the beautiful sixty-foot sailboat "Lucky Lady" sail up to and view the spectacular Na Pali Coastline but Kauai Sea Tours is the only company granted a State Parks Special Use Permit to go to visit the ancient Hawaiian fishing village of Nualolo Kai along the coast. The catamaran moors off the Na Pali coast and then special zodiac type boats called rigid hulled inflatables will ride, (those that choose this option), to shore to experience these breathtaking isolated beaches and ancient fishing villages first hand. The Na Pali Coastline is truly one of the most magnificent to be seen anywhere and should certainly be seen from the vantage point of the ocean. This is truly an adventure you will remember for a lifetime. In addition to these unique Napali tours Kauai Sea Tours also offers whale watches in season, full and half day raft trips and private charters that can be customized to your own parameters.

Much has been written about the beauty of Kauai's Na Pali Coastline and one of the very best ways to experience this in is by riding one of the rigid-hulled inflatables offered by Kauai Sea Tours. The Na Pali Coastline will take your breath away. These sheer and verdant cliffs literally descend thousands of feet from high above directly down to ocean below. Waterfalls are a part of the spectacle as well as the cliffs are often covered with dozens of them. The inflatable rafts (think Jacque Cousteau) of Kauai Sea Tours provide a separate and distinct capability not offered by many of the larger boats. Because of their smaller size (they have a capacity of fourteen persons) they are easily able to drive close along the coastline and pristine white sand beaches and with a sense of greater adventure, even ride directly into and through some of the numerous caves, caverns and land bridges found along the Na Pali coast. These tours are reserved for the more adventurous and should not be taken by those in frail health or with bad back conditions. For those that are up to the challenge however a day on a raft such as these on the magnificent coastline of Na Pali will prove to be one of the highlights of your Kauai vacation and Kauai Sea Cruises is here to make this experience available.

Liko Kauai Cruises offers great tours to visit Kauai's famous Na Pali Coastline. Liko himself is Hawaiian in ancestry having been born and raised on Kauai although his roots are from the forbidden island of Niihau. To Liko and his mostly Hawaiian crew, the Na Pali Coast is just like his back yard and visiting the Na Pali with them will give you an opportunity to experience the sites and special locations on this coast through Hawaiian eyes. Liko Hawaiian Cruises operates a vessel called the

Without question one of the most beautiful of all coastlines in Hawaii is the Napali Coastline, and one of the most exciting boat companies who take you there is the Napali Explorer. These boats are exciting because they are fast, maneuverable and are able to get you "up close and personal" to the sea cliffs, numerous sea caves and land bridges found on the Napali coast. Napali Explorer uses rigid hull inflatable boats in their fleet which are an improvement on their predecessor rubber zodiac rafts such as the ones that were made famous by Jacques Cousteau. This new rigid hull design has been found to be more seaworthy in the ocean environments such as found off the coast of Kauai as they allow higher speeds and a more stable ride in potentially rougher conditions. The boats that they have in their fleet are twenty-six and forty-eight feel long and respectively accommodate eighteen and thirty-six passengers. One advantage Napali Explorer has over many of its competitors is that it leaves from Kikiaola harbor just north of Port Allen which gives it a closer ride to the Napali Coastline and during the summer months it even offers a tour in the afternoon that has its pick-up point in Hanalei.

If you're up for some excitement on your Kauai vacation, give NaPali Riders a try. Your zodiac raft will whisk you along the spectacular NaPali Coastline while racing the dolphins. You'll be able to snorkel at a special protected area just off the coast of an ancient Hawaiian village. Add to the excitement a pass into (and sometimes through) some of the picturesque caves along the coastline. All in all, this is a day of adventure and adrenaline you won't soon forget.

NaPali Catamarans are pleased to offer you adventurous, narrated NaPali Coast snorkel excursions with a convenient Hanalei Bay departure. Kame Hele Kai is a 34 foot power catamaran, big enough for comfort but small enough to maybe go into a couple of the sea caves (ocean conditions permitting).
(From: $175.00 - To: $175.00)
The Napali Makai is a twenty-four foot Glacier Bay power catamaran that has as its namesake the Napali Coastline where it travels and tours. The Napali Makai only takes small groups of a maximum of six passengers on its tours to the Napali Coast and is personalized in a way not imaginable by the larger vessels. Captain Makai, who is the owner and operator of the Napali Makai has been traversing the waters of Napali for over twenty five years and is an ideal choice for your perfect Napali adventure.

Kauai's Napali Coast Tours and Activities - Each Hawaiian Island has its own uniqueness with its own special treasures. On Kauai, it’s most unique and interesting feature is its Na Pali Coast. Seeing this coastline for the first time is like seeing a “land that time forgot”. Nowhere will you see cars or roadways, cities, villages or any signs of inhabitation and it is so remote it can only be seen from the sea, by air or by the most vigorous of hikes. Here is a place that giant mountains have been carved over time by the sea, the winds and Kauai’s abundant rainfall. Many cliffs drop thousands of feet to exotic white sand beaches and clusters of waterfalls descend in a series of parallel lines forming perfect right angles to the ocean below. This special emerald green coastline can only be found on Kauai and whether you visit it by air or by ocean it should undoubtedly be included as a “must see” on your holiday on Kauai.
