The Island Adventures Kauai River Kayak is a kayak excursion that takes place on the beautiful Hulei'a River in the heart of the 241 acre Hulei'a National Wildlife Refuge and State of Hawaii Conservation District. The tour is a unique one-way paddle downwind with a short, easy jungle hike and a fun swim at a pool with waterfalls. There are four endangered species of birds under the protection of the Wildlife Refuge. The river trip is the only access to this bird habitat and you'll find the experience both educational and exciting. This tour is suitable for all levels of kayaking and hiking experience and can be described as a "soft adventure" with an emphasis on cultural education.

Description: This kayak excursion, takes place on the beautiful Hulei'a River in the heart of the 241-acre Hulei'a National Wildlife Refuge and State of Hawaii Conservation District. The tour is a unique one-way paddle downwind with a short, easy jungle hike. There are four endangered species of birds under protection of the Wildlife Refuge. The river trip is the only access to this bird habitat. Soft adventure and cultural education is the focus of this excursion. This exclusive one-way paddle brings you into Hule'ia National Wildlife Refuge, home to some of Hawaii's native wetland birds and plants. See famous movie locations and historic sites such as the Alekoko (Menehune) Fishpond. Enjoy light snacks and fruit juice at the rope swing area in the shade of mango trees along the shore of the river. At the end of your paddle, you will take a short 25-minute walk along a forest trail to waiting air-conditioned vans. Guides will take you on a 5-minute ride to your ultimate destination, 2 secluded private waterfalls! At the trailhead, you will be given bottled water and start your 10 minute hike, your first stop will be at the lower falls for a short break. Next you will walk ten minutes up the trail to the awesome 50 ft Papakolea Falls. This is where you can swim beneath the cascading falls. After 35 minutes or so, you dry off, gather and start a leisurely 15-minute hike back to the vans. Sunscreen and sunglasses are recommended.*

Departure Point: Check-in at Island Adventures Office, Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor in Lihue
