Kauai Horseback Riding
Horseback Riding in Kauai is exhilarating.
One of the greatest appeals of horseback riding on Kauai for me is the sense of exploration that it provides. There is so much to be visited by hiking the trails all throughout the island but why not luxuriate in having a horse take you to these remote locations while you view the scenery from the saddle.

There are some great rides that will take you deep into the interior of the island for the very adventurous and shorter rides that will take you to remote waterfalls where you can enjoy a picnic and a swim. I have often heard people say that these are the most fun days they have experienced on their holiday.
Horseback rides on Kauai are among the most exhilarating and beautiful of any riding tours that can be found in Hawaii and are among the most fun Kauai activities available. Horseback riding Kauai is an experience not to be missed if you have a passion for horses combined with unbelievably beautiful scenery.
There are a number of stables on Kauai and they offer a variety of different types of horseback rides:
- One ride will take you into the interior high valley of Kalihiwai Ridge on Kauai's North Shore.
- Another less lengthy ride allows you to trot and canter into a forest reserve with panoramic ocean and mountain views. Taste a guava, smell the camphor, and feel the paper bark trees. This is an exceptional opportunity to learn about Kauai's history and culture.
- Still other horseback rides take you along the spectacular ocean bluffs in the Princeville area or back along jungle streams to a delicious waterfall and pool where you can swim and have a picnic lunch. Other horseback rides are similar but also include a kayak river ride. Horseback riding tours are tailored to both beginners and the experienced horseman.
Horseback riding seems to be one of those activities that people either have a propensity for or not. If you have that propensity, Kauai is one of the best places to indulge your passion for all thing equestrian. You can take a short horseback ride along the bluffs by the Oceanside or you can pull out all the stops and spend an 8 hour journey on horseback exploring the interior of the island. Neither option will be a disappointment, nor will any of the other choices of rides in between.
Tom's Tips - Kauai Horseback Rides
- One of the most interesting rides takes you up and down the volcanic ridges deep into the interior of the island, arriving at a mountain swimming hole where a deli lunch is served. This is a treat for the spirit and the spirited.
- Children are allowed (and encouraged) to go on a Kauai Horseback Ride but only if they are 6, 7, or 8 years old depending upon which company they will be horseback riding with.
- Why not include your Kauai horseback ride along with a dip in a remote mountain pool with waterfall?
CJM Stables is a "must do" for anyone desirous of riding along the beautiful sea cliffs of south Kauai. This working cattle ranch provides spectacular rides that travel right along the coastline and dolphins, rays and various forms of sea life, including whales in season, can often be seen from the ride. The horses found at CJM are obviously well loved and cared for by the owners and wranglers of the ranch as they are some of the most beautiful animals you will find anywhere in Hawaii. These rides are well appreciated by those who experience them and these warm and sunny ranchland areas bring riders back year after year to enjoy horseback riding at its finest. Just simply being at the ranch is an experience as you will often be able to see as many as fifty head of well tended horses and often their new born colts enjoying their south Kauai surroundings. This is one of the very best areas of the island for excellent sunny weather and when many of the other portions of the island are "socked in" with rain and poor visibility CJM Stables will still be enjoying clear and beautiful conditions.

The Princeville Ranch Stables is one of Kauai's most beautiful places to take a horseback ride. When you're talking about the Princeville Ranch Stables, you're talking about "history". The Princeville Ranch is one of the oldest working cattle ranches in Hawaii and the ranch's historical roots pre-date those of the American Old West. Its beginning was in 1831 when British Consul, Richard Charlton, who was an advisor to King Kamehameha ll leased this land from the Hawaiian Kingdom and brought in one-hundred longhorns from California to start-up the ranch. The ranch still has cattle today but also offers magnificent horseback trail rides that wind their way along some of the most beautiful landscapes in Hawaii. You can choose rides that take you to ocean-side bluffs with views of the largest reef in Hawaii, the historic Kilauea Lighthouse and "Makana" which was made famous as Bali Hai in the movie South Pacific or rides that take you to a stream and waterfall with the back-drop of the stunning Hanalei Mountains in the background. However you choose to have your experience you'll be delighted with the result at the Princeville Ranch Stables. This is a great ride on a beautiful ranch with wonderful people and fabulous horses that will provide you with a great Hawaiian adventure.

Silver Falls Ranch is located on four-hundred acres nestled into the interior high valleys of Kalihiwai Ridge on Kauai's beautiful North Shore. The riding trails here at the Silver Falls Ranch are among the most lush and beautiful on the island and well suited for horseback activity for all levels of riding experience and trail guides will assist all guests based on their past exposure to horses. The horses here are among the most beautiful to be found on the island and are considered the pride and joy of the ranch. Every effort is made to provide the best life possible for these animals and as a result they reward their riders with a great equestrian experience. Not all the tours offered by the Silver Falls Ranch strictly deal with horseback riding as some of the rides will take you to a beautiful secluded mountain pool and waterfall where you will be treated to a picnic lunch and a glorious swim with plenty of time to relax. Generally speaking the folks at Silver Falls Ranch ask that you be in good physical condition before signing up for the ride and riders fourteen years or younger are required to wear helmets.
