Umauma Ziplines is located on the northern coast of the Hilo side of the Big Island. The location requires participants from Hilo to take a short drive up the Hamakua coastline to the ranch. This side of the island is covered in a lush jungle because of the massive amount of rainfall that lands here. Luckily, the day we went we had fairly clear skies and it did’nt look like we were in danger of getting rained on. (more info)
Since "Cruiser Bob" first pioneered the original Haleakala bike ride decades ago the format of the rides has changed, but the industry has remained the same in many ways. While Bob has long since left the industry, distinct larger then life individuals have followed in his footsteps and continue to rule the mountain. Some of these Haleakala bike ride personalities are Billy and Billy, the owners and operators of Easy Riders. (more info)
If you are in decent shape and want to do something worth telling your friends about once you get home you should consider doing a Kayaking trip down the Napali Coast on Kauai. While it is a long trip (17 miles), the majority of it is normally with the current, which makes the paddle quite a bit easier then it sounds.
Island Adventures is the only kayaking company that goes up the river through the Hule'ia National Wildlife Refuge. This river eventually goes up towards the Kipu Ranch. We started paddling at the mouth of the river near the Nawilwili Harbor. and before we got off our kayaks we passed the rope swing that was used in the beginning sequence of the movie "Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark" where Harrison Ford is running down the hill and then jumps off of a vine into a river where his biplane is waiting for him. We met up with Captain Zodiac office at their office, located on edge of the Honokohau Harbor about ten minutes north of Kona. When I showed up the people at the office greeted me and then directed me where to meet up with the boat. I followed their directions and found the boat in a slip near the boat ramp (about 75 yards away from the office). The boat was a black inflatable surround speedboat, the captain was making some last minute adjustments and I was the first passenger to show up. (more info)
Rarely will you find a boat that is so well suited to the excursion that it goes it as the boat that is operated by Liko Kauai Cruises. Their 49 foot catamaran is powered with twin 260hp inboards and the overall design is fairly narrow. This combination allows their boat to be long enough to really smooth out the rough seas, have powerful engines enough to cut through the swells, and a narrow enough profile to still be able to make it into the “open ceiling cave” like the smaller zodiac rafts. The first of all of the Hawaiian Islands to have helicopter tours on it was the island of Kauai. Once you go to Kauai, you will understand that this was no coincidence. The island of Kauai not only has some of the most spectacular scenery that can be found anywhere in the state, it also is the perfect size to be viewed with a one hour helicopter tour. Today we got to do the tour in luxury, with first class seats on Sunshine Helicopters top of the line Whisperstar helicopter. (more info)
When we checked in at the Outfitters Kauai office in Poipu the clouds were close to the ground, covering the ground with a light mist. It seemed like it would probably burn off in the next few hours, but for the time being it provided a much cooler climate then is normally found on the sunny south side of Kauai. As soon as we got inside, we were fitted with our zipline harnesses and helmets. Our guides briefed us on what we could expect from the days adventure and then we loaded up into the van and began our drive to the zipline course. (more info)
Today we did one of the premiere tours that is offered on the island of Kauai. We paddled sea kayaks down the entire Napali Coastline. We started at “Tunnels Beach” and made our way underneath the cliffs all the way to the immense Polihale Beach on the far west side of Kauai. This tour basically took us in a 360 degree circle around the entire island. We began at the Outfitters Kauai office in Poipu and at the end of the day we ended at the same location. I’ve spent a great deal of time on the island of Kauai and I can honestly say that this is my favorite activity that I’ve taken part in here. (more info)
I think it is safe to say that if there is any single activity that an equestrian would enjoy on their trip to the Hawaiian islands, it is CJM Country Stables. The CJM Ranch is located on the sunny shores of Poipu on the south side of the island of Kauai. This dryer climate and coastal location make something possible that is very desirable, riding the horses on the beach!
