Hawaii Bike Tours Are Very Popular

For years Hawaii bike tours have been a main-stay of the activities available for the visitors coming to the islands. Perhaps no island provides more bike tours to visitors than the island of Maui and this is all due to the phenomenon that occurred in the early eighties with the advent of the Haleakala downhill bicycle adventures. These bike tours made good use of the 10,000' high Mt. Haleakala to use as a beginning point for a bike tour that winded its way all the way down to the sea. Largely because these tours required no peddling at all and just relied upon gravity to propel these bikes the entire 38 miles from the top of the mountain to the coast below, they became an instant success. Not only was this a great way to enjoy the outdoor environment on the brisk and nippy slopes of Haleakala but it was a tour that provided a lot of excitement. Taking somewhat less than four hours to make the entire descent, even including the many stops made along the way, these Hawaii bike rides made the Haleakala downhill the first of the really popular Hawaii bike tours.

Since those early days there have been some revisions in the way the Hawaii bikes on Maui have been used to operate these adventures. Most Maui bikes now travel in a van all the way to the top of the crater where the most popular of the tours, the sunrise adventure, will see the spectacular sun rise at the top of the mountain and then descend down to the 6500' level of the mountain just beyond the national park boundary where the bikers will suit up and jump on their bikes for a descent down to the bottom. This revision was made at the behest of the National Parks themselves as they attempted to regulate the tours driving through their territory. These bike tours do travel at a speed that can cause severe harm to people falling on or even off the roadway and so these precautions were taken to make certain the most safety measures were available to the biking clientele. Today these tours are still as popular as ever and there has been a substantial decrease in the number of fallen bike accidents that have occurred on the mountain.

All the excitement that was generated by these bike rides down Haleakala on Maui made its way around to the other Hawaiian Islands and a similar tour, though much smaller in scale can be found on Kauai in a bike tour that winds its way down the mountains from the Waimea Canyon. This downhill bike experience in most ways duplicates the experience of the first downhill bike tours that were established on Maui. These Hawaii bike tours on Kauai give participants a great opportunity to witness the breathtaking views of the Waimea Canyon while enjoying the adventure of a swift downhill experience.
