On the summit, your guide will point out the observatories as they begin to open their domes and rotate into position. There are great photo opportunities as sunset transforms the area into a beautiful spectacle. Then the tour descends to mid-mountain where using a large portable telescope you'll observe the treasures of the night sky and sip on hot chocolate. Tour is approx. 7-8 hours. Note: Stargazing depends on natural conditions and cannot be guaranteed. Pick-up and return to Lanihau Center, Jct. of Hwy 190 and 200 in Kona or Kings Shops at Waikoloa Capacity: 14 Passengers in the new Van Terra 4x4, Micro Coaches featuring huge panoramic windows RESTRICTIONS: Only persons in good physical condition should take this tour. High altitude can be dangerous to persons with heart and respiratory problems and scuba/snuba divers. Pregnant women or children under 13 years should not take this trip.
ACTIVITY
SUNSET AND STARGAZING TOUR - Learn about the geography, geology and natural history of the island on the drive up the mountain by extremely informative highly trained guides. First stop to acclimate to the altitude, is at the Onizuka Visitors Center at 9000 ft. Guests will be served a delicious supper and be fitted with parkas and gloves before continuing on the steep drive to the top of Mauna Kea (13,796 ft). Departs: Daily, pick-up mid-afternoon.
