Kamanu Charters
Kamanu Charters is one of the original sailing vessels on the Big Island and has been sailing off the Kona Coastline since 1972. The Kamanu is a sailing catamaran, plain and simple. They leave from the Honokohau Marina daily on a sail to beautiful Pawai Bay. Secluded Pawai Bay is north of the harbor and is an underwater marine reserve with incredible coral formations and plenty of fish. There is limited access to this beach from the land and thus it is relatively private on a daily basis. In fact the entire sailing charter aboard the Kamanu is very private in the sense that they limit the tour to a maximum of only ten couples. The sailing portion of the trip on the Kamanu usually occurs on the return from snorkeling at Pawai Bay as the Kamanu makes use of the prevailing trade winds. While at Pawai Bay however you will enjoy the exquisite snorkeling and underwater scenery. The bay is filled with shallow shelves, ledges, caves, steep drop-offs and exotic lava formations. In addition to the hundreds of tropical fish to be seen your sail will likely include viewing some spotted eagle rays and green sea turtles. Dolphins usually become a part of your day at some point and of course whales are visible during whale season which usually runs from Christmas through Easter. The visibility at Pawai Bay is remarkable as well and is generally over one-hundred feet of crystal clear viewing.
